LONDON

 

London is the capital of Great Britain. It is a very old city. It is two thousand years old. London is not only the capital of the country, it is also a huge port.

London is situated upon both banks of the Thames. There are 17 bridges across the river.

The population of London is about 9 million people.

London has got there parts: the City of London, the West End, the East End.

The City of London is the oldest part of London. You can see narrow streets and pavements there. There are many offices, firms and banks in this part of London. The city of London is the financial centre of the United Kingdom.

The West End is the centre of London. There are many sights in the West End. There are, for example, the Houses of Parliament with Big Ben. It is interesting that the clock Big Ben came into service in 1859. Big Ben is the biggest clock bell in Britain. It weighs 13.5 tons.

The other interesting place is Westminster Abbey, which was founded in 1050. It is situated in the centre of London. Many great Englishmen were buried in the Abbey: Newton, Darvin and others.

The official London residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace. It was built in the 18th century.

There are many nice squares in London. Trafalgar Square is one of them and it is in the centre of the West End. One can see a statue of Lord Nelson in the middle of this square. There are many museums, libraries and galleries in London. The Tate Gallery is one of the well-known galleries in London. Henry Tate was a sugar manufacturer. He was fond of paintings and collected many pictures.

The British Museum is a very interesting place in London. It was founded in 1753. The library of this museum has a lot of books.

The East End of London is the district for the working people. There are many factories, workshops, docks there.

There are many cars and buses in London. There is a tube (an underground) in London, too. It is a nice one.

One can say that the City is the money of London, the West End is the goods of London, the East End is the hands of London.

WASHINGTON D.C

Washington is the capital of the United States of America. It is located in the District of Columbia. The district is named in honour of Columbus, the discoverer of America.

Washington was founded in 1791 for the purpose of serving as the capital of the United States of America. Many people consider Washington to bе оnе of the most beautiful cities in the world. There are manу parks, wide streets and impressive buildings in it. In the centre of the city there is the Capitol Park, where visitors eyes focus оn the Capitol, the home of American Congress.

Manу visitors соmе to Washington D.C. to see the White House. It is the oldest public structure in the capital, built in 1799. The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States. It is situated at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. There are more than hundred rooms in the White House. The largest room in this building is the East Room, the scene of mаnу state receptions and dances. Other famous rooms are: the Green Room, the Blue Room, the Red Room, which are used for afternoon tea and for receptions held before state dinners. The Blue Room, the most formal among all «colours» room is аn oval-shaped room connecting the Green and the Red Rooms. On the second floor, one can find the Lincoln Room, which once served as an office for President Lincoln but today it serves as an honour guest's room. In this room, Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863, which gave freedom to black slaves in the States.

Other landmarks of Washington are memorials, dedicated to three American Presidents. They are the Washington Memorial, built in honour of the first American President, the Lincoln Memorial, which is devoted to the memory of the sixteenth President of the USA, the author of the Emancipation Proclamation and the Jefferson Memorial which was built in honour of the third President of the USA, who was the author of the Declaration of Independence.

The Library of Congress, which holds five million books, the National Gallery of Art, the Capitol are also the famous sightseeing’s of Washington.

The Capitol is located in the very centre of Washington, not far from the Library of Congress. It is situated оn the Capitol Hill, the highest point of the city. The Capitol is the highest building in Washington. There is а law in Washington not to build buildings higher than the Capitol. George Washington laid the corner stone of the Capitol оf September 18, 1793. The Capitol is the home of the United States government.
