Text A

LAWYERS

Many people who work in legal affairs are called lawyers. Lawyers have official qualification to work in legal matters. Most of them also have professional experience. A lawyer can be an attorney, a public prosecutor, or a judge. In England a lawyer can be a barrister or a solicitor. Barristers can argue a case in front of a judge and have the right of audience even in the highest courts. Clients don’t pay directly to barristers. Solicitors employ them. Solicitors prepare cases. They give advice to clients, make investigation and prepare documents. Then they give the cases to the barristers. But solicitors have the right of audience in lower courts. Most senior barristers become judges.

There is a system of giving free legal advice to people who cannot pay for it. Experienced solicitors and barristers help people free of charge in criminal and civil cases.

LAWYERS (continued)

Lawyers can do different kinds of work. There are small firms of attorneys who help ordinary people every day. They give advice in consumer affairs, traffic accidents disputes, contracts for the sale of land, etc. They can also prepare defence for clients accused of crimes.

In modern society lawyers become more and more specialized. There are different kinds of law: consumer law; land law; company law; intellectual property law, etc. All these spheres of human activity need special lawyers.

Lawyers also work in large law firms or in law departments of large commercial enterprises. They specialize in very specific areas of law.
