3. Функции герундия в предложении и способы его перевода:

1) подлежащее – переводится существительным или инфинитивом

Studying is the way to knowledge. – Учеба – это путь к знанию.

Getting several viewpoints is vital. – Чрезвычайно важно иметь не­сколько точек зрения.

2) именная часть сказуемого – переводится существительным или ин­финитивом

The only way to know the distance is measuring it. – Единственный способ определить расстояние – это измерить его.

One of the effects of heat is changing a solid into liquid. – Один из резуль­татов воздействия тепла – это превращение твердого тела в жидкость.

3) часть глагольного сказуемого – переводится инфинитивом

They have finished discussing the results of the experiment. – Они окончили обсуждать результаты эксперимента.

4) дополнение (прямое или предложное) – переводится существитель­ным, инфинитивом или сказуемым в придаточном предложении

4. Герундиальный оборот (притяжательное местоимение или существи­тельное в притяжательном или общем падеже + герундий) обычно перево­дится придаточным предложением, вводимым союзом «то, что» в любом падеже. Существительное (или местоимение), стоящее перед герундием, становится в русском предложении подлежащим, а герундий – сказуемым.

Einstein’s being awarded the Nobel prize in physics soon became widely known. – То, что Эйнштейн был награжден Нобелевской премией в обла­сти физики, вскоре стало широко известным фактом.

There’s no hope of our getting a complete analysis of the measurements within 10 days. – Нет надежды (на то), что мы получим полный анализ этих измерений в течение 10 дней.
