How to Answer Questions About Failure

If you didn't fail at anything, say so.

If you can think of an example, be sure that it's a minor one and turn it into a positive. For example, if you were working on a project that was behind deadline работали над проектом, срок которого был ниже установленного срока, explain to the interviewer how you adjusted the workload and the timeline скорректировали рабочую нагрузку и график to get back on track and ahead of schedule чтобы вернуться в нужное русло и досрочно.

Explain and Share Your Solution
Explain what caused the failure, and discuss what you did to ensure it wouldn't happen again in the future. If you can share an example that turned out well in the end, despite some glitches along the way, use that. This way you won't leave the interviewer with the impression that you have failed. Rather, you’ll show how you can turn a difficult situation around.

Try to keep it positive, but don't blame others for what went wrong. Deflecting blame on someone else isn't going to make the best impression. Employers don’t want to hear that someone else was to blame for your problems.

On the same note, don’t make excuses for what went wrong. Instead, share your solutions for preventing a fail next time around. This will show that you’re proactive, flexible and willing to move forward even when things aren’t going as planned.

41. What was most (least) rewarding about your job? Что было (по меньшей мере) вознаграждением за вашу работу?

Match Your Response to the Job

When interviewing, always be cognizant of the job you are interviewing for and tailor your response accordingly. Try to accentuate the positive, regardless of what question you have been asked, because you don't want to be construed as someone who is negative about work, in general.

Make a List

Take the time to make a list of the qualifications the employer is seeking, and be sure the responsibilities you mention as most rewarding are a match.

When asked about what was least rewarding, mention something that won't be required in the new job. Again, keep it as positive as possible. You could frame it as something that was the least rewarding as compared to the most rewarding activities.

42. What relevant experience do you have?

Interviews are difficult and stressful for everyone, regardless of where you are in your career. The application process and interviews is time-consuming and when you finally get that interview, it is normal to stress about certain questions.

One of the most common question asked in interviews revolves around the candidates' experience. Interviewers may phrase the question in several different ways, such as:

  • How does your experience prepare you for this role?
  • Do you think your experience matches the needs of the job?
  • Do you think you're qualified for this position?

When you are asked questions related to the experience that qualifies you for the job, it's important to be very specific about your skills and experience. Instead of answering it broadly, try to use specific examples of how your past work prepares you for the new role.

The best way to respond is to describe your responsibilities in detail and to connect them to the job you are interviewing for. Tie your responsibilities in with those listed in the job description for the new position.

That way, the employer will see that you have the qualifications necessary to do the job. Focus most on your responsibilities that are directly related to the new job's requirements.

It's also important to be honest and accurate. Don't embellish your job, because you don't know who the hiring manager will be checking with when they check your references.

Here's how to match your qualifications to a job description.

Sample Answer

For example, if asked about how experience relates to the job in a marketing role, a strong answer would be:

"My years of experience have prepared me well for this marketing role. You mentioned that customer service is a big part of this job; I spent three years working in a high-volume call center, answering customer calls and identifying solutions.

I developed extensive skills in working with customers, even when they were distressed. I'm excellent as deescalating situations and finding a way to make the customer happy. Since the role of your marketing department is to improve customers' impressions of the company, my experience will be an asset to your team."

It's important that you practice answering questions, but do not try to memorize your responses. You want to sound relaxed and natural. Instead of learning your answer line by line, just focus on key points to emphasize to get your point across to the interviewer.

43. What will you do if you don't get a job offer?

Best Answer to Interview Question, "What Will You Do If You Don't Get This Position?"

I am committed to this company and its advancement so, should I not be selected, I will work with and support whoever might get selected. However, I do feel that my experience in the department and with the team would make me the best candidate.

More Answers

If you are focused on changing positions, and you are interviewing for other jobs, here are some examples of answers to use:

  • I will continue looking in this field for another position that will fit my schedule and goals.
  • I will continue to watch for other vacancies within our company and opportunities for advancement.
  • I am exploring more training and getting further credentials to enhance my qualifications for advancement.
  • I will consider broadening my search to include some different industries hiring part time people.
  • I really feel like this would be a good fit for me, so I'm hoping I won't have to think too much about that!

Benefits of Applying for Internal Positions

Applying for an internal position is a chance to promote yourself to the interviewers and members of the selecting committee. You may have skills and experience that your current position doesn't utilize. Your supervisor and coworkers may not be familiar with them, either.

Updating your resume and presenting yourself at internal interviews is a way to advertise your untapped talent.

You may discover that the position you have applied for is not the best match, or there may be a candidate they prefer. You don't get the job that you applied for, but you have not wasted your time and effort. The interviewers will remember you when there are future openings and promotions. You may even get a request to submit your application for a job.

You might receive an offer to be detailed to fill in for a position when someone is on leave or travel, allowing you to learn a new function. This can be a stepping stone to a promotion.

Drawbacks of Applying for Internal Positions

You may feel demoralized if you are not selected for the position, and you must work with the person who was hired or promoted. This disappointment is natural, but it can result in lingering dissatisfaction and workplace stress. Consider how you will deal with these emotions if you are not selected.
