Lesson 6

                                            The Formula of Success

                                               Block I. Vocabulary

Task 1. Read the text and translate the words and phrases in bold into Russian:

What does success mean to you? What is its definition? We all are thriving for success in our lives, be it our work, life, or relationships. We all have our own dreams.
It's your life, and it is up to you to decide what you want in life. For someone, success might mean material pleasures, for someone else it might mean having a peaceful and happy life, for someone it might mean having fulfilling relationships, and for some it might be achieving name and fame. However, there is no easy way or shortcut to achieve success in anything that we want.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah's story is full of ordeals: she was born to an unwed mother, and at a very young age was molested by her male relatives, and lacked family security. After shifting to her strict father's home, she concentrated on her oratory skills, and the rest is history. She went on to become one of the strongest woman on Earth, with her talk show gaining immense popularity in America. " The key to realizing a dream is to focus not on success but significance - and then even the small steps and little victories along your path will take on greater meaning. "

What can we learn from her success? Your background does not matter if you want success in life. It is imperative that you concentrate on the available resources, and make the most of it. And of course, according to Oprah, your small wins are little steps to winning in the long run.

Tony Hsieh

He is a super-successful entrepreneur of the Internet world. He is the CEO of Zappos. After selling Link Exchange to Microsoft, in 1999, he joined Zappos, an online shoe and clothing shop. He provided the golden 'Midas Touch' to the company, and it was because of him that the company became one of the most successful ones in the world.
His book 'Delivering Happiness', released in 2010, was an instant hit, where he describes his journey from working at a worm farm to the corporate life and his achievements.
" Have fun. The game is a lot more enjoyable when you're trying to do more than just make money. " His mantra for success is to enjoy your work, and not look at it as a task. If you merely look at it for making money, you'll never enjoy it. It is very important that you understand that, to grow, you cannot merely run after figures.

Mark Zuckerberg

'Facebook' is his brainchild, and he shot to fame at a very early age in life. His success story is known almost to everybody. As a teenager, Mark was fascinated with computers, software, and coding. In 2004, when he was studying at Harvard, he developed the networking site exclusively for Harvard students. It was earlier called 'The Facebook'. Later, the site became open to the public, and today Facebook has millions of users worldwide. Though Mark was accused of stealing ideas, and had to fight through litigation's, he chose to pay the settlement money. Whatever the case may be, Mark indeed has success written by his own hands.
" If you just work on stuff that you like and you're passionate about, you don't have to have a master plan with how things will play out. "
He believes that being passionate about work will make your work not sound like work, and instead make it easier. A movie was based on his story, titled 'The Social Network'. For more secrets about his success, read 'The Boy Billionaire: Mark Zuckerberg in His Own Words'.

Task 2. Answer the questions:

1) What are the secrets of a successful career?

2) What helped the famous people build up their career?

3) Why do these mention in the text people make difference in the modern world?
