Participial Construction The Objective Participial Construction may be found: 1. after verbs denoting sense perception, such as to see, to hear, to feel, to find, etc. e.g. Then he looked out of the window and saw clouds gathering. – Потом он выглянул из окна и увидел, что собираются тучи. I heard my wife coming. The dog heard his name pronounced through the open door. 2. after some verbs of mental activity, such as to consider, to understand. e.g. I consider myself engaged to Herr Klesmer. – Я считаю себя помолвленной с господином Клесмером. 3. after verbs denoting wish, such as to want, to wish, to desire. In this case only Participle II is used. The governor wants it done quickly. – Отец хочет, чтобы это было сделано быстро. 4. after the verbs to have and to get; after these verbs only Participle II is used. In this case the Objective Participial Construction shows that the action expressed by the participle is performed at the request of the person denoted by the subject of the sentence. e.g. I had my coat altered. – Япеределала пальто (т. е. поручила кому-то переделать его). You can get your clothes made in Europe. – Вы можете заказать себе платья в Европе.
The Subjective Participial Construction is chiefly used after verbs of sense perception such as to see, to hear, to watch, to notice, etc. e.g. They were heard talking together. – Cлышно было, что они разговаривали вместе. The horse was seen descending the hill. – Видно было, как лошадь спускалась с холма.
The Absolute Participial Construction This construction is generally rendered in Russian by means of a subordinate clause if it is at the beginning of the sentence or a coordinate clause if it is at the end. The participle in this construction stands in predicate relation to a noun or a pronoun in the nominative case. The Absolute Participial Construction is always separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma or a semicolon. e.g. The door and window of the vacant room being open, we looked in. – Так как дверь и окно пустой комнаты были открыты, мы заглянули в нее. This duty completed, he had three months leave. – Когда эта работа была закончена, он получил трехмесячный отпуск. Weather permitting, we shall start tomorrow. – Если погода позволит, мы поедем завтра. Не turned and went, we, as before, following him. – Он повернулся и вышел, как и прежде, мы последовали за ним.
The daughter sat quite silent and still, with her eyes fixed on the ground. – Дочь сидела молча и неподвижно, опустив глаза в землю.

Dinner being over, we assembled in the drawing room. 12. This being understood, the conference was over. 13. This done, and Sikes having satisfied his appetite, the two men lay down on chairs for a short nap. 14. She sat staring into the fire, the glove forgotten on her knee. 15. They continued their way, the boy sobbing quietly, the man ashamed. 16. He lifted the lid and kept it in his hand while she was drinking, both standing. 17. She danced light as a feather, eyes shining, feet flying, her body bent a little forward. 18. He was standing there silent, a bitter smile curling his lips. 19. Jack sat silent, his long legs stretched out. 20. The speaker faced the audience, his hand raised for silence. 21. She hurried along, her heels crunching in the packed snow. 22.
