The rules of presenting things

A. Most people want to be polite and behave well around others. It means knowing how to greet and talk to people. When people meet, they often shake hands. In the United States, people prefer to shake hands firmly for a few seconds. In some Middle Eastern countries, people hold the person's hand gently for a longer time. Handshaking varies around the world. Also in some countries you show respect when you look someone directly in the eye. In other parts of the world, to look at someone directly is rude. To be respectful, a person looks down at the ground.

B. Three authors wrote a book “Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands” about cultural differences. In their book, they discuss greetings, gift-giving, and time. Around the world cultures have different ideas about giving gifts. In the United States, if someone gives you a gift, you should open it while they are with you. That way they can see how happy you are to receive it. In China, you should open a gift after the person is gone.

C. There are some cultural differences in the way people use space. In North America, for instance, people usually stand about an arm's length apart during a conversation. However, in some countries in the Middle East and Latin America, people stand closer. It can be awkward if one person likes to stand close and the other person likes to stand farther apart.

D. When someone is rude to us, it is natural or normal to be rude to them. You are rude to me, so I'm rude to you. But, when we are polite to someone who is rude, it breaks the circle. In other words, you’re rude to me, but I'm polite to you. If people can learn to do this, our society will be better. For example, you accidentally bump into someone on a full bus. The person shouts at you, “Look where you’re going!" But you say calmly and politely something like, "Excuse me, but the bus is crowded. You don't need to yell" Doing this might help them remember that yelling on a crowded bus is bad etiquette.

E. Teachers spend a lot of valuable class time dealing with bad behavior. A lot of this is just bad manners. We teach manners for many different situations. Children learn both table manners and classroom manners. They also learn how to relate to adults. In the end, manners are all about having respect for others. "That’s why it’s important to use words like please, thank you, and excuse me. That’s why kids in the classroom should raise their hands and not shout out answers. When children learn to be courteous in these small ways, they learn to respect other people.

F. Many countries have rules about what you should and shouldn't wear. In Asian and Muslim countries, you shouldn't reveal the body, especially women, who should wear long-sleeved blouses and skirts below the knee. In Japan, you should take off your shoes when entering a house or a restaurant. Remember to place them neatly together facing the door you come in. This is also true in China, Korea, Thailand, and Iran.

G. An exchange of cards is essential for all introductions. You should include your company name and your position. If you are going to a country where your language is not widely spoken, you can get the reverse side of your card printed in the local language. In Japan, you must present your card with both hands, with the writing facing the person you are giving it to.

Money and Sports

"Goal!" shouts the announcer. It is a familiar sound for Manchester United these days. They have just scored another goal against a visiting team. Compared to United, the other side looks weak. The visiting players know that it is almost impossible to win a game against ManUnited.

Man U has better players, better coaches, better equipment, and better salaries. They have something that many teams don't have: a lot of money. This gives their club an unfair advantage over other teams that are not as wealthy.

Manchester United Football Club is the richest sports team in the world. The English club is worth more than $1.8 billion. The Spanish soccer team Real Madrid is worth $1.3 billion. These clubs have enough money to pay the high salaries of the best players in the world. For example, in 2008, Manchester United paid Cristiano Ronaldo more than $18 million. They paid Wayne Rooney more than $16 million. Other teams also spend a lot of money on their players. These wealthy clubs include Barcelona in Spain, AC Milan in Italy, and Chelsea in England. As a result, these teams have been very successful. For example. Manchester United won championships in 2006, 2008, and 2009. Money is a clear advantage for these professional teams.

The wealthiest teams make money in several ways. First, they can sell tickets at high prices because fans want to see the top players in action. Second, television stations pay the teams to broadcast their games. Third, large companies give financial support to the best teams. These corporate sponsors pay money so that their company name can be on the clubs' shirts, shoes, and stadiums.

The recent success of the English team Chelsea shows an example of the effect of money on a team. For many years, Chelsea was a club with little money and few wins. They didn't have a lot of money to pay good players. Their last championship win was in 1955. Everything changed in 2003, when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought the team for $233 million. In his first year Abramovich spent more than $350 million on players. By 2006, Chelsea had won two championships. Now Chelsea is one of the richest clubs in the world.

Many sports fans feel that money in sports creates an unfair advantage. Some teams have so much money that it seems impossible for poorer clubs to beat them. Wealthy teams are usually more successful, so they sell more tickets and make more money. Teams that do not have as much money usually are not as successful. It is difficult for them to get money from tickets, television, and corporate sponsors. Sports fans know that money gives some clubs a great advantage.

There are no easy solutions to this problem, but there are some possibilities. Some people think that rich teams could share some of their money with the poorer ones. The poorer teams would be able to pay higher salaries for better players this way. Another solution is to put a limit on the amount of money that teams can spend on players' salaries. Thus the players' salaries would not continue to rise so much. However, finding and agreeing upon the best solution is very complicated.

Sports fans love close competitions between athletes, but everyone wants teams to compete fairly. Fair competitions do not seem possible when there are a small number of teams that are very wealthy. Money creates unfair advantages in professional sports, and although there are no easy answers, we should continue to search for ways to make sports fair.
