Canberra

Canberra is the capital city of Australia. Its population is a little over 330,000. It attracts tourists for unique landscapes, natural and historical monuments, animal world, and the culture of the aboriginal peoples.

In 1908 debates rose about the city to become the Australian capital. The choice had to be made between two largest cities: Sydney and Melbourne. However, it wasn't an easy task to make a choice. As a compromise it was decided to build the third city. This city was named Canberra which in the language of Australia's local people means "meeting place". It was officially established on March 12, 1913. Nowadays Canberrans celebrate the birthday of their city on the third Monday in March.

The city consists of seven districts as well as of many smaller suburbs. By the way, the main transport highways go around the city and form so called "circles" which make the traffic easier. For its significant areas of natural vegetation Canberra is sometimes called "the Bush City". The trees and plants were brought to Canberra from different countries of the world: there are Russian birches and bird cherry, Canadian pines and Japanese cherry.

Ottawa

Ottawa is located in the province of Ontario. It is the capital of Canada. The population of Ottawa is about 850,000. There are two main rivers in the city: the Ottawa and the Rideau.

Many of the first houses were made of wood. And during its history the town was hit by great fires several times. In the first part of the 20th century the city was reconstructed. A new plan was designed for the city by Jacques Greber, a reputed architect of the century. He planned Ottawa as a beautiful city of impressive parks, alleys, and squares. The most famous and the largest park in Ottawa is Gatineau Park. The oldest part of the city was named Lower Town. Here the historic heritage of Ottawa exists. Wellington Street is the main artery of the city. It is the center of administrative and cultural life of the city.

The city got the name "the City of Bridges", because there are a lot of bridges crossing the Rideau and the Ottawa rivers. The waters of the mighty Ottawa River were used to generate electricity. Ottawa became one of the first cities to use electric heating appliances and to set up lighting facilities in the streets and roads. Today Ottawa is a vibrant modern city with lots of attractions for its citizens and visitors. It ranks as one of the top cities to live in.

Dublin

Dublin is the capital of Ireland, known as "the Emerald Isle" for its green meadows and glades. Its population is about 950,000. Dublin is home to outstanding people like Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, and George Bernard Shaw.

Historians say that the name "Dublin" may derive from different languages and mean "black pool" or "deep pond". The city was founded as a Viking settlement in the 10th century. Later Dublin became the capital of Ireland. Dublin has been a large trade center from the medieval times. The city expanded rapidly in the 17th century, but was ruined during the Anglo-Irish War and the Irish Civil War.

The Liffey River flows through the city dividing it into Northside and Southside. Traditionally Northside is considered the district of the working class, while Southside is the district of the middle class and the rich. Nowadays however this division is rather out-of-date, because the financial situation in the city is favorable, and Dublin is becoming one of the wealthiest European cities. Dublin also serves as a busiest airport and an important seaport.

The climate is mild here. Winters are rather warm with little snow. Summers are cool with lots of rainfall and dense fog.
