Solstice in Space: Astronomy of the First Day of Winter
During the winter solstice the sun hugs closer to the horizon than at any other time during the year, yielding the least amount of daylight annually. On the bright side, the day after the winter solstice marks the beginning of lengthening days leading up to the summer solstice.
"Solstice" is derived from the Latin phrase for "sun stands still." That's because—after months of growing shorter and lower since the summer solstice—the sun's arc through the sky appears to stabilize, with the sun seeming to rise and set in the same two places for several days. Then the arc begins growing longer and higher in the sky, reaching its peak at the summer solstice.
The solstices occur twice a year (around December 21 and June 21) because Earth is tilted by an average of 23.5 degrees as it orbits the sun—the same phenomenon that drives the seasons.
During the warmer half of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole is tilted toward the sun. The northern winter solstice occurs when the "top" half of Earth is tilted away from the sun at its most extreme angle of the year.
Being the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice is essentially the year's darkest day, but it's not the coldest. Because the oceans are slow to heat and cool, in December the seas still retain some warmth from summer, delaying the coldest of winter days for another month and a half. Similarly, summer doesn't hit its heat peak until August, a month or two after the summer solstice.

Cinema plays an important role in the life of any society. The cinema has become part of the modern way of life. There is no denying the fact that the cinema is an excellent vehicle of culture. Its possibilities are unlimited. In the earliest years of the cinema its power to show contemporary events was recognized and appreciated. More than anything else this unique quality secured popularity for the film as a new form of instruction and entertainment. That’s why the cinema is considered to be one of the best ways of spending their leisure time.
There are a lot of different kinds of films: feature films, theatrical films, horror films, thriller films, popular science films, travelogues, mystery films, documentaries, animated cartoon films. Besides, the films may be color or black and white, full-length or short, sound or silent, dubbed in mother tongue, three-dimensional or wide-screen.
We can see films either in the cinema or on the TV. As I am often short of time, I have practically no time for going to the cinema. For this reason I see films on television more frequently. But sometimes I manage to go to the cinema. I prefer feature films and amusing comedies. It’s a pity the life is so difficult nowadays and I want to relax a little, sometimes even to laugh. But at the same time I am fond of true-to-life films describing the life of the ordinary people, their feelings and problems. Such films move me deeply, they arouse the feelings of sympathy or hatred for the heroes. As a rule such films leave a deep and lasting impression upon me.
A modern cinema program contains a newsreel which shows us pictures of important recent developments. It is usually shown before a feature film and it’s often worth seeing. Sometimes they show animated cartoon film at seeing which the audience is in a state of excitement from the beginning to the end. Especially I like Walt Disney’s cartoons “Duck Tales”, or “Vinnie-the-Pooh’s Adventures”. In my opinion the animated cartoon films are popular both with children and adults.
Showing the educational films is arranged mainly for schoolchildren and students.

Hollywood is one of the districts of Los Angeles, California. It is identified as one of the most happening places in world. Hollywood is the metonym for the motion picture industry of the United States. The nickname of the Hollywood is "Tinseltown". In February 2006, Goldberg and Koretz, the Assembly members introduced a bill to specify the geographical boundaries of Hollywood. Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and the City Council of LA supported this bill and on August 28,2006, this bill was approved by the Governor of California.
The official borders of Hollywood are Beverly Hills on the east, Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Barham Boulevard and Cahuenga Boulevard on the south, Melrose Avenue on the north, Hyperion Avenue and the Golden State Freeway on the west. Chamber of Commerce, Hollywood, appointed an official who serves as "Honorary Mayor of Hollywood".
Movies are an intrinsic part of our lives. They make us laugh, cry, shout in anger, cheer in glee, and help us vicariously live situations we know we never will otherwise. In this article, we give you ten movies that stand out in the many movies that Hollywood has produced over the years.
Selecting the top 10 Hollywood movies is a subjective exercise at best. However, great movies usually have a few common factors about them. First of all, as far as I am concerned, I enjoy movies that have great performances, a storyline that grips my imagination, and that indefinable something about them that just reaches out and touches your inner core - a universal human experience, is the best way that I can describe it. Secondly, great movies have an ageless, timeless quality about them, and can be seen over and over, without ever getting old. And that is certainly the case with the movies I have listed below (and many more besides) - I can watch them again and again. And thirdly, great movies are not merely entertaining, they somehow manage etch themselves in your memory. With these criteria in mind, I have chosen my top ten Hollywood movies. This list is in no specific order, except year of release.
