Great Britain
The full name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and a great number of small islands. Their total area is over 314 000 sq. km. The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. Northern Ireland occupies one third of the island of Ireland. It borders on the Irish Republic in the south. The island of Great Britain consists of three main parts: England (the southern and middle part of the island), Wales (a mountainous peninsula in the West) and Scotland (the northern part of the island).

The warm currents of the Atlantic Ocean influence the climate of Great Britain. Winters are not severely cold and. Summers are rarely hot.
The population of the United Kingdom is over 58 million people. The main nationalities are: English, Welsh, Scottish and Irish. In Great Britain there are a lot of immigrants from former British Asian and African colonies.
Great Britain is a highly industrialized country. New industries have been developed in the last three decades. The main industrial centres are London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Glasgow and Bristol. The capital of the country is London. The United Kingdom is a parliamentary monarchy.

Benjamin Britten
Benjamin Britten is the most important English composer of our time. He was born in England in1913. Benjamin Britten’s father was a doctor and loved music very much. Benjamin’s mother played the piano and sang well. The friends of the family often came to the house to play musicin the evenings. Benjamin had a great interest in music and he started to play the piano and compose music when he was only five. While he was at school, Benjamin continued to compose songs. He worked hard at other subjects too, but he was only fond of music. By the time he was fourteen he wrote many musical pieces. When he left school, he went to the Royal College of Music for three years.
When he was 19, he began to work for a small film company as a musician. The company produced documentary films and had very little money, so Britten wrote music not for large orchestras but for six or seven instruments. During his work for the films, radio and theatre he met young progressive poets of the day. They played an important part in Britten’s intellectual development. He also loved children and wrote many songs for them.
В. Вritten followed the musical traditions of realism. He was fond of the suite, the song cycle and opera. Two of his most important works are the opera “Peter Grimes” and the “War Requiem”. He often appeared as conductor and pianist in England and abroad. Benjamin Britten was a good friend of our country and he often came to Russia.
