Equivalence and Adequacy in Translation

Practice tasks

I. Specify the creative and professional approaches to translating the following sentence.

One legendary Chanel creation, hand-embroidered by celebrated Maison Lesage, is said to have sold for 230 000 euros.

Говорят, что одно из знаменитых платьев от Шанель, украшенное ручной вышивкой, выполненной славными мастерицами дома моды Мишоне, пару лет назад было продано за 230 тысяч евро.

Use the following algorithm:

Step 1

First of all, the translator should find some background information concerning the sphere of activity Maison Lesage was engaged in. The article entitled La maison lesage and published on the Internet site http://chanel-news.chanel.com/en/archives/la-maison-lesage/ in April 10th, 2009 gives a clear insight into the area of specialization of this company.

Read the abstract:

The story began in 1858, when Charles Frederick Worth opened his haute couture fashion house, and started making use of the prodigious talent of the embroiderer Albert Michonet, whose studio was purchased by Albert and Marie-Louise Lesage in 1924. This was the beginning of a period of fruitful and close collaboration with the best-known names of the time.

In 1949, on the death of his father, François Lesage took over management of the company at the tender age of 20. For 50 years, he has cleverly combined the skills of a traditional craft with meeting the pioneering requirements of the new generation of fashion designers.

For each haute couture collection, François Lesage, and his team of designers and embroiders, develop a hundred new embroidered pieces, which are added to some forty thousand samples created since 1858 and which have today become the inspiration for many designers.

Conclusion 1:

С давних времен занимались этим ремеслом

Step 2

Taking into account the historical period when the described events took place (it was the end of the 19-th and the beginning of the 20-th century) it might be supposed that sewing and embroidering were traditionally female-dominated professions.

Conclusion 2:

Значит, переводя текст, можно называть работников «мастерицами»

Step 3

And now it’s time to demonstrate your comprehensive mastery of grammar, syntax and vocabulary of both the source and the target languages. Fill in Column A with the words and phrase from the sentence which correspond to the points in Column B.

A B
Is say do Complex Subject

II. Below there are two versions of translation of the Russian text into English. Analyze both of them and say which one sounds more appropriate for the English language and why. (Strelkova, p. 11)

Общественное производство всегда бывает связано с преобразованием природы либо стихийным, хищническим, либо плановым, обуславливающим воспроизводство ресурсов, масштабы которого все увеличиваются.

В силу этого, изучение географической оболочки может быть успешным лишь при детальном познании влияния человеческого общества на природу, обусловленного способом производства.

Version 1:

Social production is always connected with alteration of nature, either uncontrolled, ruthless or planned, conditioning reproduction of resources, the scale of which is constantly increasing, in view of all of which, the study of the earth’s crust can be successful only with detailed study of the human effect on the environment, conditioned on the methods of production.

Version 2:

Industry will always alter the environment, but this can be done either in an unregulated, even rapacious way or else properly regulated, stipulating that resources must be renewed on an ever-broadening scale. So that studying the environment can be meaningful only if there is also a detailed study of man’s impact on his environment, and that depends on what production methods he employs.

III. Look at the following texts extracts and decide, which type of translation you would classify them in (fill in the table given below). Underline key words which help you define the type of translation.

Globalization has recently become a potent competitive force in business operations, with multinational firms aiming to compete better by concentrating certain activities at specific sites in the world wherever local conditions are most favourable. A car manufacturer might construct wheels in France, engines in Germany, and then assemble the car in the USA. The same principle applies to IT, but perhaps even more so because, in contrast to car components, the transport of information around the world is instantaneous and relatively cheap with modern telecommunications. The primary question becomes not so much whether to globalize IT, but rather which specific IT activities to globalize and how far to globalize them.

Peter Pan by J. M. Barrie   Mrs Darling loved to have everything just so, and Mr. Darling had a passion for being exactly like his neighbours; so, of course, they had a nurse. As they were poor, owing to the amount of milk the children drank, this nurse was a prim Newfoundland dog, called Nana, who had belonged to no one in particular until the Darlings engaged her. She had always thought children important, however, and the Darlings had become acquainted with her in Kensington Gardens, where she spent most of her spare time peeping into perambulators, and was much hated by careless nursemaids, whom she followed to their homes and complained of to their mistresses. Д. These are contributions that are not contained by Russia's borders, as vast as those borders are. Indeed, Russia's heritage has touched every corner of the world, and speaks to the humanity that we share. That includes my own country, which has been blessed with Russian immigrants for decades; we've been enriched by Russian culture, and enhanced by Russian cooperation. Все эти достижения выходят за пределы России, сколь бы громадной она ни была. Нет такого уголка в мире, где не ощущалось бы русского влияния - неотъемлемой составляющей мирового культурного наследия. Не миновало оно и мою страну, которая, на счастье, имела возможность десятилетиями давать приют русским эмигрантам, обогащаться достижениями русской культуры и развиваться благодаря сотрудничеству с Россией.

V. Analyze the translation of the fragment of the article by Doug Yakola Ten Tips for Leading Companies out of Crisis, published on the site http://www.mckinsey.com/insights/corporate_finance/ten_tips_for_leading_companies_out_of_crisis and fulfilled by a student. In your opinion, does it meet the requirements of the ethics of translation and translator’s competence? If no, give the reason for your position.

English text Russian translation
Ten Tips for Leading Companies out of Crisis Even good managers can miss the early signs of distress, says McKinsey’s Doug Yakola, who’s been running recovery programs for 20 years. The first step is to acknowledge there’s a problem. “I’ve seen my share of boiled frogs,” says Doug Yakola, comparing companies in crisis with the metaphorical frog that doesn’t notice the water it’s in is warming up until it’s too late. As the chief restructuring officer or CFO of more than a dozen turnaround situations over nearly two decades, Yakola has witnessed firsthand how managers back right into a crisis without recognizing that their situation is worsening. “They’re not bad managers, but they’re often working under a set of paradigms that no longer apply and letting the power of inertia carry them along.” And if they don’t realize they’re facing a crisis, they won’t know that they need to undertake a turnaround, either.

SEMINAR 2

The Translation Process

1. What kind of problems do translation strategies solve?

2. Comment on the stages of translation process.

3. What is the hierarchy of the UT in modern English? Illustrate your answer with the examples.

Practice tasks

I. Match the stages of the translating process given in Column A to their description in Column B.

A B
c   Review the material you are going to translate to study the terminology, intent and content of the material. Make sure you have all the necessary reference material at hand, such as good dictionaries and glossaries. a After a short break from work checking the translation against the original to ensure accuracy of content and proofreading it to correct spelling and grammatical errors will be much more effective.
d   Analyze the ST from the point of view of employing various translation techniques. b Readability of the TT is the main aim of the translator.
e   Then make a draft translation. Though grammatically correct, the first version of translation may seem awkward and unsuitable in the TL. To avoid sluggishness, resort to various translation techniques, namely: contextual replacements, lexico-semantic modifications, grammatical transformations and etc. c Proper nouns, such as the names of the people mentioned, geographic names, historical movements, time periods, and etc. deserve an investigation phase of their own. You should make sure that they are spelled correctly.
a   Leave a little extra time to review the text after having finished the translation. d Remember: all transformations of the original structures you will resort to in the process of translation must be justified.
b   Read your draft again to be sure that the TT meets all the requirements of the TL norms. e Never leave blank spaces, question marks or other marks that may easily go unnoticed when you are making your final delivery.

II. Read the following text and comment on the stages of translation. Translate the text into Russian.

“It’s a Jungle Out There!”

Among the most damaging myths and metaphors in business talk are those Darwinian concepts of “survival of the fittest” and “it’s a jungle out there”. The underlying idea, of course, is that life in business is competitive, and that it isn’t always fair. But those two points are very different from the “dog-eat-dog” and “every man for himself” images that are routine in the business world. It is true that business is and must be competitive, but it is not true that it has to be cutthroat or cannibalistic or that “one does whatever it takes to survive”.

Of course, some of the animal metaphors are charming: A nice boss is a “teddy bear” and a tough negotiator is a “tiger”, but most of them are demeaning. Employees, executives, and competitors are described as snakes in the grass, rats and a wide variety of other rodents, and insects and arachnids. Corporations in turn are described as fish tanks, shark-infested waters, and snake pits, as well as the botanical image of the jungle.

But besides being bad biology (and unfair to the beasts), the jungle metaphors are particularly bad for business, which is (or should be) anything but uncivilized and devoid of rules or fairness. However competitive a particular industry may be, it always rests on a foundation of shared interests and mutually agreed-upon rules of conduct. Competition takes place not in a jungle but in a well-ordered society that it both serves and depends upon.

Business life, unlike life in the mythological jungle, is fundamentally cooperative. It is only within the bounds of mutually shared concerns that competition is possible. In fact, evolutionary theory shows that cooperation is almost always the best strategy, even in nature. One of the primary principles of evolution seems to be the evolution of cooperation, from the simplest multicelled organisms to the seemingly ineradicable colonies of ants, termites, and bees; the efficient packs and herds of carnivores and their prey; and, hardly to be left out of this impressive sociobiological portrait, ourselves. Contrary to the “every man for himself” metaphor, business almost always involves large cooperative and mutually trusting groups that include networks of suppliers, service people, customers, and investors.

III. Read the excerpt from the article Возвращение святынь, which was published in the magazine Краснодарский край in 2011. Make an algorithm of the translating process. After having analyzed the approaches to overcoming possible difficulties, translate this text into English.
