k. After operating the ABS, repeat steps (e) to (i), and then fill the primary circuit with 60 cm3 (2.11 Imp oz, 2.03 US oz) of the rec-ommended brake fluid.

 

• Tighten the bleed screw to the specified torque.

STEERING HEAD

 

1. Stand the scooter on a level surface.

WARNING

Securely support the scooter so that there is no danger of it falling over.

NOTE:

Place the scooter on a suitable stand so that the front wheel is elevated.

4. Check:

 

• steering head

 

Grasp the bottom of the front fork legs and

 

gently rock the front fork. Looseness/binding → Adjust the steering head.

 

5. Remove:

 

• handlebar

 

Refer to “HANDLEBAR” in chapter 4.

 

6. Loosen:

 

• upper bracket pinch bolts 1

 

 

• Remove:

 

steering stem nut 1

 

upper bracket 2

6. Adjust:

• steering head

a. Remove the lock washer 1, the upper ring nut 2, and the rubber washer 3.

 

b. Loosen the lower ring nut 4 and then tighten it to specification with a steering nut wrench 5.

 

NOTE:

Set the torque wrench at a right angle to the steering nut wrench.

5. Loosen the lower ring nut 4 completely, then tighten it to specification.

WARNING

Do not overtighten the lower ring nut.

2. Check the steering head for looseness or binding by turning the front fork all the way in both directions. If any binding is felt, remove the lower bracket and inspect the upper and lower bearings.

 

Refer to “STEERING HEAD” in chapter 4.

 

3. Install the rubber washer 3.

 

4. Install the upper ring nut 2.

 

5. Finger tighten the upper ring nut 2, then align the slots of both ring nuts. If neces-sary, hold the lower ring nut 4 and tighten the upper ring nut until their slots are aligned.

 

6. Install the lock washer 1.

 

NOTE:

Make sure that the lock washer tabs a sit cor-rectly in the ring nut slots b.

7. Install:

• upper bracket 1

 

• steering stem nut 2 8. Tighten:

 

• upper bracket pinch bolt

• Measure:

NOTE:

Make sure that all of the cables and wires are properly routed.

• Point the front wheel straight ahead.

 

• Install a plastic locking tie 1 loosely around the end of the handlebar as shown.

 

• Hook a spring gauge 2 onto the plastic locking tie.

 

• Hold the spring gauge at a 45° angle from the handlebar, pull the spring gauge, and record the measurement when the handle-bar starts to turn.

Steering head tension 1.96 ~ 4.90 N

(200 ~ 500 gf, 7.06 ~ 17.65 oz)

 

• Repeat the above procedure on the oppo-site handlebar.

 

• If the steering head tension is out of specifi-cation (both handlebars should be within specification), remove the upper bracket and loosen or tighten the upper ring nut.

 

• Reinstall the upper bracket and measure the steering head tension again as described above.

 

• Repeat the above procedure until the steer-ing head tension is within specification.

• Grasp the bottom of the front fork legs and

 

gently rock the front fork.

 

Looseness or binding → Adjust the steering

 

head.
