Главная линия мысли в исследованиях аддикции — подход обусловленного научения Абрахама Уиклера и экспериментаторов над животными Мичиганского Университета (см. приложение В) — явно имеет отношение к психологическим наградам и наказаниям, связанным с потреблением наркотиков. Главное ограничение этих теорий и исследований, однако, состоит в том, что они считают само собой разумеющимся дистресс отрыва и допускают, что облегчение боли отнятия неизменно является первичным подкреплением приема опиатов после инициального периода их приема. Другие награды (обеспечиваемые средовыми стимулами) также рассматриваются, но только в качестве вторичных подкреплений, связанных с облегчением симптомов отнятия.
Механистический характер теорий обуславливания связан с тем, что они родились из наблюдений за лабораторными животными. Человеческое сознание порождает гораздо более комплексные реакции на наркотики и на их отнятие, чем те, на которые способны животные. Только животные реагируют на наркотики предсказуемым образом, и только животные (особенно содержащиеся в клетках) реагируют одинаково на начало ломки — приемом новой дозы наркотика. Чтобы теория обуславливания могла объяснить поведение людей-аддиктов (так же, как и неаддиктивных потребителей наркотиков), она должна учитывать различные социальные и личностные подкрепления — удовлетворение эго, социальное одобрение, безопасность, связность Я, сенсорную стимуляцию и т.д. — которые мотивируют человеческие существа на потребление наркотиков и на другие действия.
Понимая ограничения гипотез, основанных на изучении животных, Алфред Линдесмит предложил вариацию теории обуславливания, которая добавляет к ней важное когнитивное измерение. В "Аддикции и опиатах" Линдесмит утверждает, что аддикция случается, только когда аддикт понимает, что физиологическое привыкание к морфину или героину уже произошло, и что только другая доза наркотика защитит его от ломок. Несмотря на настояние Линдесмита на том, что аддикция — сознательный, человеческий феномен, его теория так же узко базируется на физической зависимости и симптомах отнятия как универсальном подкреплении, как и другие модели обуславливания. G. ФИЗИОЛОГИЧЕСКИЕ И ПСИХОЛОГИЧЕСКИЕ МЕХАНИЗМЫ АДДИКЦИИ
Публикация в "Науке" работы Луизы Лоуни и ее коллег по связыванию молекул опиатов в мозгу мышей, которая является частью текущей линии исследований в этой области, убедила многих людей в том, что достигнут прорыв в физиологическом понимании аддикции. Но для каждой работы такого рода, попавшейся публике на глаза, всегда есть другая, похожая на статью в "Психологии сегодня" Ричарда Дроубо и Харбенса Лала о работе с крысами-морфиновыми аддиктами, которые были приучены принимать звонок колокольчика (вместе с плацебо-инъекцией) за инъекцию морфина. Лал и Дроубо обнаружили, что антагонист морфина налоксон, который, как ожидалось, противодействует химическим эффектам морфина, тормозил эффекты условного стимула (колокольчика) так же, как и самого морфина. Химические реакции в мозгу могут, конечно, наблюдаться, когда бы ни было введено психоактивное вещество. Существование таких реакций, и тот факт, что все психологические процессы в конце концов принимают форму нервных и химических процессов, не следует использовать для того, чтобы не задаваться вопросами, поднимаемыми впечатляющим рядом исследований, наблюдений и субъективных отчетов, которые свидетельствуют в пользу изменчивости человеческих реакций на наркотики.
