READING AND TRANSLATION PRACTICE

SAMARA, MY HOMETOWN

When the river Volga meets the Zhiguli Mountains it deviates to the east forming the Samara Bend. Four centuries ago a fortress was built at the point where the river takes a sharp turn and it eventually grew to become the city of Samara.

For 250 years the town’s population remained virtually constant. Only in the middle of the XIX century when a railway was built and navigation developed along the Volga River Samara became a trade center connecting Central Russia with the Urals, Siberia and Central Asia. During the beginning of the Great Patriotic War a number of industries were evacuated here from Moscow, Leningrad and other places.

Many people living in the city are engaged in heavy industry, mechanical engineering, oil refining, food industry and transport. Samara is known for the production of aerospace launch vehicles, various space services, engines and cables, aircraft, chemical products, bearings of different sizes, automated electrical equipment; construction materials.

Samara is one of the most important railway intersections. Railroads of different direction cross here. A new modern and technically equipped railway station appeared in Samara. It is said to be one of the biggest and imposing in Europe. Samara is on route to Asia. The city has a regular communication with all the ports of the Volga basin with an exit to five seas.

Large cities, as a rule, are divided into the “old” and “new” parts. Samara’s old downtown section is like a book on the history of architecture. The cocktail of styles prevails in the old city. Everybody in merchant Samara wanted to make his own mansion look unlike any other building. That led to the variety of styles.

Many outstanding people visited and lived in Samara. The writer Alexei Tolstoy spent his childhood and youth here. Maxim Gorky used to be a subeditor at Samarskaya Gazeta for several years. After the triumph of the revolution Kuibyshev was elected chairman of the local Soviet of Worker’s and soldier’s Deputies in 1917. Dmitry Shostakovich lived in Samara during World War II and finished his Seventh Symphony there.

There are a lot of museums in Samara: the Art museum, the A. Tolstoy museum, the museum of natural history and local history studies. Stalin's bunker is the museum which is most frequently visited by the guests of our city. This unique museum which is a 12 storied building under the level contains documents and photos about the Great Patriotic War when Samara served as the " second capital" of the country.

Samara is a great cultural center with universities, academies, a great amount of schools, colleges, professional schools, lyceums and so on. Samara enjoys the reputation of being a theatre city. There are a lot of theatres in Samara. They are: the Drama Theatre, the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Puppet-Theatre and the theatre of Young Spectator. There are also a number of Amateur theatres in Samara which make the theatrical life of the city richer. There is also a zoo and a circus in the city.

All our citizens are proud of the embankment of the Volga with trees, flowers and sandy beaches. We like to have a rest on the bank of the Volga. It’s the best place for tourists to enjoy the scenery and to start sightseeing. It's a real pleasure to take a river voyage and to admire the beautiful surroundings of the Zhiguly Mountains. You may breathe the fresh river air and travel to many parts of our country.

At present more than 1, 2 mln. people live here. I am proud of my hometown, its places of interest and its traditions.
