Checking the crankshaft and

CONNECTING RODS

Ъ Measure:

crankshaft runout

Out of specification → Replace the crank-shaft.

Crankshaft runout

Less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 in)

Ы Check:

crankshaft journal surfaces

crankshaft pin surfaces

bearing surfaces

Scratches/wear → Replace the crankshaft.

Ы Measure:

ance

Out of specification → Replace the big end bearings.

Crankshaft-pin-to-big-end-bear-ing clearance

The following procedure applies to all of the connecting rods.

CAUTION:

Do not interchange the big end bearings and connecting rods. To obtain the correct crankshaft-pin-to-big-end-bearing clear-ance and prevent engine damage, the big end bearings must be installed in their orig-inal positions.

Ь Clean the big end bearings, crankshaft pins and the inside of the connecting rod halves.

Ь Install the big end upper bearing into the connecting rod and the big end lower bear-ing into the connecting rod cap.

NOTE:

Align the projections a on the big end bear-ings 1 with the notches b in the connecting rod and connecting rod cap.

Э Put a piece of Plastigauge® on the crank-shaft pin.

d. Assemble the connecting rod halves.

NOTE:

А Do not move the connecting rod or crank-shaft until the clearance measurement has been completed.

А Apply molybdenum disulfide grease onto the bolts, threads, and nut seats.

А Make sure that the “Y” mark c on the con-necting rod faces towards the left side of the crankshaft.

А Make sure that the characters d on both the connecting rod and connecting rod cap are aligned.

e. Tighten the connecting rod nuts.

CAUTION:

Б When tightening the connecting rod nuts, be sure to use an F-type torque wrench.

Б After tightening the connecting rod nut to the specified torque, turn the connecting rod nut another+90°.

Refer to “INSTALLING THE CONNECTING

RODS”.

Л Remove the connecting rod and big end bearings.

Refer to “REMOVING THE CONNECTING RODS”.

Л Measure the compressed Plastigauge® width 1 on each crankshaft pin.

If the clearance is out of specification,

select replacement big end bearings.

big end bearings (P1, P2, P3)

NOTE:

Н The numbers И stamped into the crankshaft web and the numbers 1 on the connecting rods are used to determine the replacement big end bearing sizes.

Н “P1, P2, P3” refer to the bearings shown in the crankshaft illustration.

For example, if the connecting rod “P1” and the crankshaft web “P1” numbers are “4” and “1” respectively, then the bearing size for “P1” is:

Bearing size for “P1”: “P1” (connecting rod) – “P1” (crankshaft web) = 4 – 1 = 3 (brown)

bearing clearance.

Out of specification → Replace the crank-shaft journal bearings.

Crankshaft-journal-to-crankshaft-journal-bearing clearance

The following procedure applies to all of the journal bearing.

CAUTION:

On the journal, the larger value is used as a basis for calculation of the oil clearance, and on the journal bearing, the smaller value is used.

П Clean the surface of main journal and jour-nal bearings.

П Check the bearing surface. If the bearing surface is worn or scratched, the bearings should be replace.

NOTE:

If either of the right or left journal bearing is worn or scratched, both bearings should be replaced as a set.

Р Measure the outside diameter a of each main journal at two places. If it is out of specification, replace the crankshaft.

Р Measure the inside diameter b of each journal bearing at two places.

Р If journal bearing inside diameter is “45.03” and crankshaft journal outside diameter is “44.98”, then the main journal oil clearance is:

Main journal oil clearance: Journal bearing inside diameter – Main journal outside diameter = 45.03 – 44.98 = 0.05 mm

If the oil clearance is out of specification, select a replacement bearings.
