We’ll get there by air and spend a week making tours around the city. – What are we going to see next? – We can go to the Black Sea (2) and stay there for some days. – Are you sure the place is worth seeing? – I am! The place is favorable for holiday-making. – What should we see next? – I suggest you to go to the Ural (3). We’ll enjoy fresh air in mountains. It helps to relax. – It seems I like the idea of traveling to Russia more and more! – At last we can go to Vladivostok (4). It’s one of the largest cities of the country. – Great! Text II Moscow Read the text and say why Moscow is the main city of Russia
Moscow is the capital of Russia. It is the main political, economic and cultural centre of the country. Mocsow is situated on the Moskva river. It was founded more than 800 years ago by Yuri Dolgoruky. Moscow is the largest city in Russia and one of the largest cities in the world. More than 10 million people live there. Every day about one million people come to Moscow from all over Russia and other countries. The heart of Moscow is Red Square. The Moscow Kremlin and St. Basil's Cathedral are the most beautiful masterpieces of Russian architecture. The traffic in Moscow is very heavy. There is the underground, buses, trolleybuses, trams and taxis in Moscow. Four airports connect Moscow with other parts of our country and many other countries. There are nine railway stations in Moscow. There are very many plants and factories in Moscow that produce machinery, motorcars, transformers, motors, TV sets, watches and other goods. Moscow is very beautiful. It is known for its beautiful old cathedrals, churches and monasteries. Some of them date from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Before the revolution of 1917 Moscow had 350 churches, but many of them were destroyed after the revolution.
Moscow is also noted for its art museums. The most popular of them are the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. The Tretyakov Gallery houses a unique collection of Russian painters. Almost all famous Russian painters are represented there. The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts contains a vast collection of antiquities and a well-known collection of modern foreign painters including Impressionists. The heart of Moscow is the Kremlin and Red Square. Thousands of people visit the Kremlin every day to see its beautiful cathedrals, museums, palaces. Within the Kremlin Walls visitors also find a beautiful modern building – the Palace of Congresses, which seats six thousand people. Moscow is the centre of political, cultural and educational life in Russia. There are a lot of theatres and concert halls in Moscow. The most popular theatres are the world-famous Bolshoi Theatre, the Maly Theatre, the Chaikovsky Concert Hall and others. Moscow is a city of students. There are a lot of institutions of higher education in it. The largest among them is Moscow University on the Lenin Hills. There are over 50 other institutes and universities in Moscow. Moscow is a country’s major industrial center. Machine building instrument making and radio electronics are the leading industries of the capital.
