Text I Russia Read the text and say if Russia is a great country. Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. The vast territory of Russia lies in the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is over 17 millions square kilometers. It stretches 9000 km from west to east, and 4000 km from north to south. Russia borders on twelve countries: in the West it borders on Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Byelorussia, the Ukraine; in the South it borders on Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, the Korean People’s Democratic Republic. Twelve seas and three oceans wash the shores of Russia. Russia has all kinds of surface – mountains, hills, lowlands, downs, plains and deserts. There are vast areas of forests in Siberia and the European North. The Urals are the natural boundary separating the European and the Asian parts of the country. Other mountainous areas are the North Caucasus and Karelia in the northwest. The most important rivers are the Volga in Europe and the Yenisei and the Ob in Asia. The deepest lakes are Baikal and Ladoga. The Black Sea, the Caspian, the Azov and the Baltic Seas are also important water resources of Russia. Their coasts are favourable for holiday-making. The climate of Russia is different in different parts. In central European part it is continental, with frosts and snow in winter and hot summers. To the west of the centre and in the northwest the climate is raw and mild. In the southern areas there is hardly any snow in winter and summer may be very hot. The coldest areas are in the extreme North and in the northern part of Siberia.
Russia is rich in raw materials and energy resources. It has deposits of oil, gas, coal, iron, gold and many others, which enabled the country to develop different industries. The largest cities in Russia are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod and many others. The largest seaports are Murmansk, Vladivostok, Kaliningrad, Novorossiysk. Moscow is a capital of the country. Russia is a federal republic. The legislative body of the country is State Duma and the executive body is the Government, headed by the Prime Minister. The president is the head of the state. He is elected every four years. Big changes in political and economical life have happened in Russia during last years. Our country is involved in the complicated process of formation of completely new relations in international and domestic life. But in spite of all these facts Russia is going ahead.
