Членение высказываний (развертывание редуцированного предиката)

Членение высказываний бывает двух видов – внешним и внутренним.

	Внутреннее членение	замена простого предложения сложноподчиненным	She heard herself described as a middle-aged woman.	Она слышала, что ее называли пожилой женщиной.
	Внешнее членение	одно высказывание преобразуется в два или более	After 70 years with an almost unchanged corporate structure, the industry has seen 4 major mergers.	В течение 70 лет корпоративная структура в данной отрасли оставалась практически неизменной, однако за последнее время произошло четыре слияния компаний.

 

Членению, как правило, подвергаются те английские высказывания, в которых фактически два субъекта. Один из них выражен и грамматически представлен подлежащим в предикатном словосочетании, состоящем из подлежащего и сказуемого; другой существует в скрытой, завуалированной форме. Для его выражения в английском языке используется ряд особых грамматических средств. К ним относятся так называемые синтаксические комплексы с инфинитивами и герундием.

5a	Инфинитив в функции обстоятельства последующего действия (сопутствующего обстоятельства) (attendant circumstances) - инфинитив в этой функции выражает действие, следующее за действием, выраженным глаголом-сказуемым, и является как бы его логическим развитием.	They arrived at the fair to find that their rivals had already launched a new model.	Они приехали на ярмарку и узнали, что конкуренты уже запустили новую модель.
She woke up to find her husband gone.	Она проснулась и обнаружила, что муж уже ушел (complex object).
5b	Инфинитив с предлогом for (конструкция for + Noun (Pronoun)+infinitive)	There is an urgent need for someone to tackle this problem.	Крайне необходимо, чтобы хоть кто-нибудь разрешил эту проблему.
It’s quite possible for Chinese banks to accept your proposal.	Вполне возможно, что китайские банки примут ваше предложение.
	Герундиальный оборот	There is high probability of their being invited to the congress.	Весьма вероятно, что их пригласят на конгресс.
Fidel Castro’s presenting a report at the Congress was announced 2 weeks before.	То, что Фидель Кастро будет выступать с докладом на съезде, было объявлено двумя неделями ранее (Выступление Фиделя Кастро было объявлено двумя неделями ранее).
	Абсолютные конструкции с причастием (I или II) употребляется в функции обособленного обстоятельства и может выражать различные обстоятельственные отношения: причинную, условную и временную связь или же выражать сопутствующие обстоятельства. Эта конструкция обычно передается сложносочиненным, сложноподчиненным или самостоятельным предложением. От остальной части предложения она отделяется запятой.	It being Sunday, there was no one in the office.	Так как была суббота, в офисе никого не было.
Если абсолютная конструкция расположена в первой части сложного предложения, то при переводе соответствующее придаточное предложение вводится союзами так как, поскольку, ввиду того что, после того как, если, когда, т.к. конструкция выполняет в предложении функцию обстоятельства времени (time), причины (cause), условия (condition) и переводится обстоятельственным придаточным.	The plant supplied with good raw materials, the quality of goods has greatly improved.	После того как на завод начало поступать отличное сырье, качество продукции значительно улучшилось.
Если конструкция расположена во второй части предложения, то при переводе используются союзы причем, а, в то время как, она переводится самостоятельным предложением.	The focus was made on the quality of goods, the productivity still falling behind.	Все внимание было уделено качеству продукции, в то время как производительность труда по-прежнему оставалось низкой.
Абсолютная номинативная конструкция с предлогом with (причастие в такой конструкции может опускаться, а сама конструкция может занимать в предложении место как в начале, так и в конце предложения)	The company has recovered after the default, with sales reaching record rates.	Компания оправилась после дефолта, причем продажи достигли рекордного уровня.
With the inflation rate of 7%, the country won’t be able to join EEC in the nearest future.	Так как уровень инфляции достигает 7%, страна не сможет войти в ЕЭС в ближайшем будущем.
	Высказывания, содержащие оговорки (так называемые modified statements)типа IF ANY If any, if anything, if at all, given не имеют прямого соответствия в русском языке. Они используются с целью усиления высказанной ранее мысли или выражения сомнения в ее достоверности и передаются условными придаточными предложениями. Прием членения в этом случае используется не всегда. Если оговорка относится не ко всему высказыванию, а к одному из его элементов, в русском языке могут применяться слова с ограничительным значением типа только, фактически, едва ли, почти, вовсе, вообще, по сути, во всяком случае, как бы там ни было.	A top-level group of American scientists yesterday stated that in the past 20 years the study of flying saucers had added little to scientific knowledge, if at all.	Вчера группа известных американских ученых заявила, что изучение летающих тарелок за последние 20 лет фактически ничего не дало науке.
It was a situation of a delicacy to be tactfully approached – if at all.	Возникшая ситуация была настолько деликатной, что если браться за ее разрешение, то делать это надо очень тактично. (требуется развернутое выражение)
If anything, the membership in Congress ought to be reduced to four hundred or less.	Если ужменять количественный состав конгресса, то в сторону его уменьшения, оставив не более четырехсот представителей, а то и меньше.
Few, if any, organized attempts have been made to stop the conflict.	Конфликт практически и не пытались остановить.
К эллиптическим конструкциям относится и сочетание if + причастие II (или прилагательное). На РЯ это сочетание переводится условным или уступительным придаточным предложением.	If considered from this point of view, the problem takes on a new aspect.	Если рассматривать проблему с этой точки зрения, то она приобретает (принимает) иной характер.
But the decision, if logical, requires a measure of courage.	Но это решение, хотя оно и логично, требует известного мужества.
	Вводные абзацы в газетных сообщениях информационного характера Экономия места приводит к предельной насыщенности английского высказывания самыми разными мыслями. Эта особенность не свойственна русскому публицистическому стилю. В переводе такие высказывания следует делить на несколько частей. Необходимо также учитывать, что по своей коммуникативной природе они являются конструкциями с начальной ремой, поэтому перевод начинается с темы, занимающей место в конце абзаца. При переводе подобного рода текстов важно соблюдать временную и логическую последовательность фактов действительности.	Britons were among the participants in a mining-safety conference opened in Luxembourg yesterday.	Вчера в Люксембурге открылась конференция по вопросам безопасности труда на предприятиях горнорудной промышленности. Среди прочих участников на конференции присутствует делегация Великобритании.

 

Exercise 4.9. Переведите предложения, учитывая членение высказываний в разных синтаксических комплексах и абсолютных конструкциях:

1. Horns locked, the two stags struggle for mastery.

2. I crouched in the alleyway, my eyes straining in the darkness.

3. So with the lamps all put out, the moon sunk and a thin rain drum ­ ming on the roof, a downpouring of immense darkness began.

4. The best part having been given to another actor, Josh felt unwilling to continue his involvement in the show.

5. We are dividing up the grant according to need, the largest amount being given to the homeless.

6. Her project completed, Hilary left the team.

7. With heavy seas in the North Atlantic, fishing boats stay in harbour.

8. Paintings by old masters realized £702,190 at a sale in London, with two Rembrandts accounting for £278,000 of the total.

9. The sellers offered the buyers 5,000 tons of oil, delivery to be made in October.

10. With hundreds of teachers in Detroit being threatened with layoffs, and with thousands of others around the country set to lose their jobs this fall, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) membership is probing new ways of financing public education in order to solve this crisis.

 

Exercise 4.10. Переведите предложения, обращая внимание на оговорки типа if any:

1. If anything, it will be in their interests to follow this course.

2. Other researchers, however, remained adamant that there are few if any gender differences in management.

3. When a hearing is finished, the committee decides what report, if any, it will make to the House on the measure.

4. Though this thesis sounds admirably democratic in principle, most people believe that it would make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for them to attain unity and real democracy.

5. Of course, interpreting, if more spectacular, is not the only aspect of linguistic activity in the international sphere. The ministers are expected to discuss state-to-state relations. France is one of South Africa's five major trading partners.

14. British Premier to Visit South Africa Next Month.

The British Prime-Minister is to travel to South Africa next month, the first British Prime-Minister to visit the republic since Harold Mcmillan made his landmark "winds of change" speech there 34 years ago. веха

During his stay in Russia the Canadian Prime Minister had offi­cial talks with Russian leaders. The talks were held in an atmosphere of understanding and cordiality. The parties exchanged views on the Russian-Canadian relations, prospects for broader cooperation and other problems of mutual interest. The Russian and Canadian premiers signed a protocol which provides for regular high-level consultations on important International problems as well as questions of mutual interest. 17. Britain in Dubai Talks.

The British Defence Secretary held talks yesterday on military cooperation in the United Arab Emirates, the official news agency said. (Министр обороны)

The Defence Secretary who had arrived from Saudi Arabia met with his Arab counterpart for talks on a number of bilateral issues and regional and international matters of mutual interest, the agency said. The British embassy sources said that the meeting also covered military links but they ruled out the signing of any agreement.
