Потребовалось, чтобы физическая наука открыла, что семантический универсум обладает всеми характеристиками абсолютного объекта для того, чтобы признать способ, каким первобытные люди концептуализи- руют свой мир, не только когерентным, но именно таковым, какой настоятельно необходим При наличии объекта, структура элементов которого дает картину прерывистой сложности.

Сразу же оказалась преодоленной ложная антиномия между логической и прелогической ментальностью. Неприрученное мышление является логическим — в том же смысле и таким же образом, как и наше: каким выступает наше, когда применяется к познанию универсума, в котором оно признает одновременно и физические, и семантические качества. Хотя недоразумение рассеяно, тем не менее остается верным, что, в противоположность мнению Леви-Брюля, это мышление действует на путях рассудка, а не аффективности, с помощью различений и оппозиций, а не через смешение и сопричастие. Хотя термин еще не был введен в оборот, из многих текстов Дюркгейма и Мосса видно, что так называемое первобытное мышление было квантифицированным мышлением.

Нам возразят, что существует капитальное различие между мышлением первобытных людей и нашим: теория информации интересуется сообщениями, которые подлинно являются таковыми, тогда как первобытные люди ошибочно принимают за сообщения простые проявления физического детерминизма. Однако имеются два основания, лишающих какого бы то ни было веса этот аргумент. Во-первых, теория информации была генерализована, и она распространяется на феномены, которым не присущ характер сообщений, а именно на биологические феномены. Иллюзии тотемизма имели, по крайней мере, то достоинство, что высветили фундаментальное место, приходящееся на долю феноменов такого порядка в экономике систем классификации. Обращаясь с чувственно воспринимаемыми качествами животного и растительного царства, как если бы это были элементы сообщения, и, открывая в них «сигнатуры» — а следовательно, знаки, — люди совершили ошибку в ориентировке: не всегда означающим элементом был именно тот, что они полагали. Но при недостатке усовершенствованных инструментов, которые позволили бы им поместить его туда, где он находится чаще всего, то есть на микроскопический уровень, они уже различали, "как сквозь дымку", те принципы интерпретации, для обнаружения эвристической ценности которых и того, что они соответствуют реальности, нам потребовались совсем недавние открытия — телекоммуникации, компьютеры и электронные микроскопы.

Кроме того, из факта, что сообщения (в период их передачи, когда они объективно существуют вне сознания посылающих и принимающих) выражают свойства, общие у них с физическим миром, следует, что, ошибаясь в физических феноменах (не абсолютно, но относительно, на том уровне, на каком они их постигали) и интерпретируя их так, как если бы это были сообщения, люди все же смогли подступиться к некоторым их свойствам. Для того чтобы разработать теорию информации, было необходимо, несомненно, чтобы открыли, что универсум информации это часть или аспект естественного мира. Но надежность перехода от законов природы к законам однажды засвидетельствованной информации подразумевает и надежность обратного перехода, что уже тысячелетия позволяет людям приблизиться к законам природы на путях информации.

Конечно, свойства, доступные неприрученной мысли, не те самые свойства, что притягивают внимание ученых. В каждом из случаев физический мир достигается с двух противоположных концов: один в высшей степени конкретен, а другой — в высшей степени абстрактен; либо под углом зрения чувственно постигаемых качеств, либо под углом зрения формальных свойств. Но то, что (хотя бы теоретически, и если бы не происходило резких изменений в перспективе) эти два подхода, должно быть, продвигались к сближению, объясняет, что они оба, независимо друг от друга во времени и в пространстве, привели к двум различным, хотя и равно позитивным познаниям. Одно из них — теория чувственно постигаемого — обеспечило базу и продолжает помогать нашим насущным нуждам посредством таких искусств цивилизации, как земледелие, скотоводство, гончарство, ткачество, сохранение и приготовление пищи и т. д., расцвет которых приходится на эпоху неолита. Другое — располагается с самого начала на плане умопостигаемого, из чего вышла современная наука.

Пришлось дожидаться середины этого столетия, чтобы пересеклись долгое время разделенные пути: тот, что достигает физического мира в обход коммуникации, и тот, о котором с недавних пор известно, что в обход физического он достигает мира коммуникации. Таким образом, в целом процесс человеческого познания обретает характер закрытой системы. Итак, оставаться верным вдохновению неприрученной мысли — это допускать, что научное сознание, в наиболее современной форме, будет содействовать, благодаря встрече, которую лишь она смогла бы предсказать, узаконению ее принципов и восстановлению ее в правах.
