Упражнение 1. Раскройте скобки, употребляя глаголы в форме Past Continuous Tense.
1. This morning was really beautiful. The sun (shine), the birds (sing) and everyone in the street (smile) and (say) hello to each other.
2. Mrs. Patrik looked beautiful last night. She (wear) a lovely evening dress.
3. When we arrived, she (make) some coffee.
4. While I (have) a bath the telephone rang.
5. While we (walk) in the park it began to rain.
6. The wind (blow) and the rain (beat) down. John (stand) at the bus stop shivering. He (try) to imagine being at home sitting by a warm fire. Finally he saw the lights of the bus which (approach) from the distance.

9. The dentist's waiting room was full of people. Some (read) magazines, others just (turn) over the pages. A woman (knit), a child (play) with a toy car. Everybody (wait) for the nurse to say " Next, please".
10. I lit the fire at 6. 00 and it (burn) brightly when Jane came in.
11. - The house next to yours was full of policemen and police dogs yesterday. - What they (do)? - I heard that they (look) for drugs.
12. " What you (do) between 9. 00 and 10. 00 yesterday? " asked the detective. " I (clean) my house", said Mrs. Jones. " I always clean my house at this time"

Образование Past Perfect
Past Perfect образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола had и причастия II смыслового глагола, которое соответствует третьей форме неправильных глаголов, правильные глагoлы с окончанием -ed.
We had finished the work only by midnight. - Мы закончили работу лишь к полуночи.
Отрицательная форма образуется при помощи частицы not, после вспомогательного глагола had, форма смыслового глагола остается неизменной;
I realized that he had not received the letter yet. - Я понял, что он еще не получил письмо.
В вопросительной форме вспомогательный глагол – ставится перед подлежащим, форма смыслового глагола остается неизменной:
Had the police arrived before the burglar escaped? - Полиция приехала до того, как вор сбежал?

Значение и употребление Past Perfect
1. Для образования действия, которое завершилось до определенного момента времени в прошлом («предпрошедшее»). Этот момент может быть выражен с помощью обстоятельств времени с предлогом by (by 5 o’clock, by yesterday) или другим, более поздним прошедшим действием в Past Indefinite:
By that time their marriage had already come apart. - К тому времени их брак распался.
I realized that he had not won the first prize in the contest. - Я понял, что он не получил первый приз в соревновании.
2. Для образования действия, которое произошло до определенного момента и имело видимый результат в прошлом:
She had broken her arm and could not write for a month. - Она сломала руку и не могла писать месяц.
3. В конструкции Past Perfect (by) Past Indefinite:
We had read the agreement carefully before we signed it. - Мы внимательно прочитали соглашение, прежде чем подписать его.
4. В конструкции Past Indefinite after Past Perfect:
I got to the station after the train had already left. - Я приехал на вокзал после того, как поезд уже ушел.

Когда нет необходимости подчеркивать предшествование одного действия другому, после after возможно употребление Past Indefinite:
After she heard the news, she phoned me at once. - После того, как она услышала новости, она сразу мне позвонила.
5. В конструкциях с hardly … when, scarcely…when, no sooner…than:
Hardly had I entered the room when the phone rang. – Как только я вошел в комнату, зазвонил телефон.
6. Для обозначения действия, которое началось до указанного момента в прошлом и продолжалось в течение определенного периода времени, с глаголами, которые обычно не употребляются в Continuous:
They had known each other for two years before they got married. - Они знали друг руга два года до того, как поженились.
