A day with an English family




The day of the average English family begins at about 8 o’clock in the morning, by which time breakfast is generally ready. All the members of the family gather around the breakfast table. The children receive from their father and mother a morning greeting and a kiss. Breakfast occupies little time. The father and elder brothers are generally the first to finish breakfast as at nine o’clock they are due at the office, shop or warehouse, which may be a long distance from home. It is time then for younger children to get ready for school. The mother makes them tidy, brushes their clothes and sends them off with a kiss and parting words: «Be good, children». For the mother there are many other things to do: rooms to sweep, fire places to clean, furniture to dust, carpets to clean (sweep) with a vacuum sweeper and beds to make. Besides there are potatoes to peel and other vegetables to prepare, a joint of meat to roast.

Then the table is laid and the busy housekeeper waits for her husband and children who will soon come home to have lunch.

It is then, after the things have been cleared away, and the children have gone back to school, that the mother gets a little rest. Now and then she goes out for an hour or two, shopping or paying a friendly visit. As the time approaches for the husband’s return, she prepares tea, which is always a nice cosy meal. Five o’clock is the usual time for tea in England.

Evening in an English home is spent variously. The principal item on the evening’s programme is dinner, about seven o’clock. In those homes where late dinner is not the custom, supper is taken about nine or half past nine. After supper the mother reads to the children or teaches the girls to sew. The father may amuse the boys with mechanical toys. These evening occupations at home help much more in training the children’s character than anything they learn at school. In well regulated families children go to bed early.

LONDON

London is an ancient city of more than twenty centuries old. It is the capital of Great Britain and one of the largest seaports. London is the centre of Britain’s business and cultural life. People can see there such important national collections as the famous British Museum, the National Gallery, and some others.

London today stretches for nearly 30 miles from north to south, and for about 30 miles from east to west. This area is known as greater Lon­don aid has a population of nine million people.

The most important sections of London are «the City», the West End, the East End and Westminster. «The City» is a very small part of the whole; it is only one square mile in area, and the number of people who live there is about 10.000. It is the business and financial heart of the country. There are many big banks and offices there.

Great Britain’s capital began to spread out from «the City».

Visitors who want to know about London’s history will find much to interest them in «the City». Here most of the streets are narrow and traffic is often very slow. Many of these narrow streets run down to the Thames.

The West End is the richest part of London. Its houses, streets and parks are the finest in the capital.

The finest theatres, cinemas, concert halls, large museums, hotels and big shops are in the West End. Hyde Park, one of the best and most beautiful London parks is also in this district. The port of London is to the east of the City. The docks stretch for miles and miles.

The East End of London is unattractive in appearance but very im­portant in the country’s commerce.

Many workers live in the East End. This is the poorest part of London. It has no big parks or gardens.

The worst houses of London are in the slums.

Most of the government buildings are in Westminster.

Westminster Palace is the building in which the British Parliament sits.

Blue-Collar Workers

Millions of blue-collar workers are employ­ed in factories in the United States. Some of the factories are large; an automobile plant, for example, may cover several square kilometres and employ thousands of people. Others are very small; some garment industry workshops have only twenty or thirty workers. Many factory workers in the United States belong to labour unions. The unions have helped them to obtain wages as high as, or higher than, the salaries of white-collar workers. Labour unions have also obtained, health care and vacation benefits for their members.

A Career in Business

Many office workers dream of working their way up to the top from messenger to president of the corporation. The way lies through middle management positions. Middle management includes junior exe­cutives, who may recommend action to top management or see that the company’s policies are being carried out. At the very top are senior executives, who establish the po­licies for their companies, especially those that involve finances. The top managers of the large corporations have a great deal of power and influence.

It is still possible to start out at the bottom and go all the way to the top. Because the financial operation of business is so im­portant, some accountants become top executives. In companies where technology is important, people with an engineering background can also rise to the top. No­wadays, however, education plays a central role in the selection of men and women for management jobs. Many U. S. universities have courses in business administration. The graduates of these courses often start out in middle management jobs. From there, they can easily get promoted if they show the necessary personality and ability.
