Text II

Cities of the USA

Read the text and say what American city is the most interesting to your opinion.

The largest cities of the USA are New York, Chicago, Los Angeles.

Washington is the capital of the USA. The city is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. It is not a typical American city. Washington is mostly an administrative city without much industry. It has no skyscrapers and nobody will build a house higher than the Capitol. There are a lot of large public gardens, parks where you can sit in the sun, and wide streets like Pennsylvania Avenue, which runs to the foot of Capitol Hill. Every four years it plays the role of a ceremonial way for a president, connecting the White House and the Capitol.

Washington, DC meets millions of tourists from different countries and all parts of the USA. They come to see the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and the Capitol. The Capitol, where the Congress meets, is a very high and beautiful building with white marble columns. It is in the very centre of the city. Not far from the Capitol there is the Library of Congress. It holds five million books. The White House, the residence of the President, is the oldest public building in Washington and one of the most beautiful. The other popular sights of the city are Jefferson Memorial and Kennedy Center.

New York is one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is over 11 million people. New York is an industrial and cultural centre of the country. Most business is centered in Manhattan in Manhattan Island. The whole area is very small, that’s why the skyscrapers were invented in New York and, especially, in Wall Street. Wall Street is a narrow street with big houses, but it is well known all over the world as the busiest street in the USA. People do business there.

There are two more world-famous streets – Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Broadway is the centre of the theatres and night life. It is known as «The Great White Way» because of the electric lights which turn night into day. It is the city that never goes to sleep. Buses and subway run all night. There are many drugstores and restaurants which never close their doors. There are cinemas with films that start at midnight.

Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel, and club street. If you go along this avenue, you come to Harlem, where the black people of New York live, the coloured workers, teachers, doctors and musicians.

New York is the largest port in America. More than half trade of the United States goes through this city.

There are many places of interest in New York. They are: the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations Building, Empire State Building, Columbia University, City Hall, New York Public Library and others.

Chicago is the second largest city of the country after New York. It is the largest industrial centre of the USA.

There is more air traffic at Chicago International Airport than in any other airport in the country, and Chicago is very important for its shipping industry because it is on Lake Michigan. The meat–packing industry is larger in it than in many other cities in the United States. Although Chicago doesn’t have so many skyscrapers as New York City, it does have the tallest skyscraper in the world, the Sears Building.

Another large city of the USA is Boston – the first city built on the Atlantic coast of America. It is an important port and a financial and cultural centre. It has three universities.

Los Angeles, in California, is a centre of modern industries. Not far from Los Angeles is Hollywood, the centre of the US film business.

Notes:

the foot of Capitol Hill – подножие Капитолийского Холма

a marble column – мраморная колонна

to turn night into day – превращать день в ночь

a drugstore – аптека

shipping industry – судостроение

a coast – побережье
