Конструкции There IS и There ARE
Правила употребления, перевод, вопросы, временные и отрицательные формы
Оборот there is / there are указывает на чье-либо присутствие или наличие какого-то предмета в определенном месте, а в отрицательной форме — на их отсутствие. Конструкция всегда стоит на первом месте, предложения с ней строятся по следующей схеме:
There is / there are + подлежащее + обстоятельство места/времени
| There is a hole in the bottom of the boat | В днище лодки есть дыра |
| There are many advantages to being able to speak a foreign language | Есть много преимуществ в умении говорить на иностранном языке |
Правило выбора there IS / ARE
Выбор IS или ARE зависит от следующего за конструкцией подлежащего: если оно в единственном числе — используем IS, во множественном — ARE
Подлежащее в единственном числе:
| There is only one cinema in the town | В городе есть только один кинотеатр |
Подлежащее во множественном числе:
| There are four cinemas in the town | В городе есть четыре кинотеатра |
Если подлежащих несколько, то употребление there is или there are зависит от числа первого существительного:
| There is a cat and two dogs in the garden | В саду есть кошка и две собаки (a cat — is) |
| There are two cats and a dog in the garden | В саду есть две кошки и собака (two cats — are) |
Вопросительные формы
| Is there a wolf behind this house? | Есть ли за этим домом волк? |
| Are there any tickets left? | Остались ли билеты? |
Употребление
Конструкции there is / there are подчеркивают, что или кто находится в том или ином месте. Обычно они используются, когда речь заходит о незнакомом предмете или явлении, о котором ранее не говорилось.
| There is a cat behind that tree | За тем деревом (находится) кошка (например, в ответ на вопрос What's behind that tree? ) |
Если говорится о чем-то известном, фраза чаще начинается с того предмета, о котором идет речь:
| Your cat is behind that tree | Твоя кошка (находится) за тем деревом (например, в ответ на вопрос Where's my cat? ) |
Перевод there is / there are

На русский язык предложения с there is / there are переводятся с конца: в начало ставятся обстоятельства, затем подлежащее. Сам оборот there is / are при переводе часто можно опустить или заменить подходящим по смыслу глаголом:
| There are several visitors in the gallery right now | Сейчас в галерее несколько посетителей |
| There is very little petrol in the tank | В баке осталось очень мало бензина |
У слова there в составе конструкции нет самостоятельного значения, оно не может заменить собой обстоятельство места, выраженное словом there —там
| There is a strange man there | Там какой-то странный человек |
| There are many cars there | Там много машин |
Повтор слова there здесь оправдан: в первом случае это часть грамматической конструкции, во втором — обстоятельство.
