CONVERSATION PRACTICE 1. Read and translate the dialogue. Talking about Making a Career Choice Jane: Hello! How are you! You look rather puzzled! Sarah: Hi! It`s really so, I`m thinking much about my future life these days. And how are you? Jane: Fine, thanks. Just the same! The choice of my future career is making me really mad! Sarah: Have you decided on something yet? Jane: No, not yet. That`s the problem! Sarah: Oh, look, I was surfing the Net yesterday evening when suddenly I came across a very interesting article on making career choices. Do you know that there are a lot of career development theories that can help us explain why and how we choose specific career fields? Jane: Not so many serious words at once please, Sarah. Aren`t you very busy now? Maybe we can have a stroll in the park and talk about this? Sarah: Oh, yes, with pleasure! So, when we think about career choice, several things immediately come to mind – job description, training and education required, career outlook, and salary – but there are a number of other factors that may influence our decisions. Jane: It`s beginning to be very interesting! What are they? Sarah: As I`ve already said, there are plenty of them. For example, gender, as both men and women have experienced career-related stereotypes. How we view ourselves as individuals may influence both the opportunities and barriers we perceive when we make career decisions. Jane: Yes, it`s certainly so, but I think social and economic conditions in the country are more important than gender. Sarah: I wouldn`t dare to compare the factors but I agree that all of our career choices take place within the context of society and the economy. Several career theories, such as Social Cognitive Career Theory and Social Learning Theory, address this context in addition to other factors. Events that take place in our lives may affect the choices available to us and even dictate our choices to a certain degree. Changes in the economy and resulting job market may also affect how our careers develop. Jane: There is nothing to add here, I think.
