Exercise 1. Read and translate the word combinations.

 

to look through, to look through the register, to look through the text. The teacher is looking through the group register.

to be through with, to be through with a dictation, to be through with an exercise. When we are through with our tests, we give them to our teacher.

to make up, to make up plan, to make up one’s mind. They are making up the dialogue. We made up our minds to become economists.

to get/give marks, to get marks in English, to give mark for an excellent answer. We get good and excellent marks in English. The teacher gives us marks for the test.

to work hard, to work hard at the language. We work hard at our English.

to take/pass a credit, to take an exam in English, to pass a credit in history. This term we are taking a credit in English.

a ) –er, -or

b ) –ation

to dictate-dictation; to translate – translation; to correct – correction; to inform – information; to combine – combination; attentive – attention.

c) ence/ent

presence – present; absence – absent.

Exercise 5. Translate the following compound nouns.

 

A first-year student, ear-phone, tape-recorder, notebook, blackboard, classroom, exercise-book, sick-list, serviceman.

Exercise 6. Make sure you know the following word-combinations.

Exercise 8. Read the text.

 

At the English lesson

Our English classes usually begin with the teacher’s greeting. The teacher says: “Good morning/afternoon/evening! Be seated! ”

Now, we are at the English lesson. The teacher is looking through the group register. We are reading the text. Student Ivanov is translating text into Russian, Petrov is retelling the text, Smirnov and Sidorov are making up the dialogue. The teacher is asking questions and we are answering them. Now we are doing grammar exercise. On Monday we usually write test papers so we are preparing to the test now. The teacher is explaining grammar rules to us.

Tomorrow we’ll write a dictation. When we are through with it the student-on duty will collect our exercise-books. The teacher will correct our mistakes and give us marks for the test. We usually get good marks in English because we work hard at it. We work much in our language laboratory. We put on the ear-phones, switch on the tape-recorders and listen to the tapes and records. This term we are taking a credit in English. We hope to pass it successfully.
