My Family.

 

My name is Sergei Voronov. I am eighteen years old. I am a first-year student of the Social-Economic Institute. We study social, economic and technical subjects at the Institute. My favourite subjects are English, Psychology and Physical Culture. I work hard at all the subjects because I want to become a highly-educated specialist. My family is rather large: I have a father, a mother, two brothers, a sister, a grandfather and a grandmother. My grandfather is the oldest in our family, he is more than 75 years old. He is a veteran of the Great Patriotic War. He has many medals and the Order of the Red Star. Now he is a pensioner. My grandmother is younger than my grandfather. She is a pensioner too.

My father is a computer programmer. He graduated from one of the Moscow technical institutes. He is very experienced. He is a broad-shouldered, tall man with fair hair and grey eyes. He is forty six. My father often sings and when we are at home and have some free time, I play the guitar and we sing together. My father knows all about new radio sets and likes to repair old ones. My mother is a doctor she works at a hospital. She likes her profession. She is a good-looking woman with brown hair. She is forty-four but she looks much younger. She is tall and slim. My parents have been married for twenty six years. They have much in common, but they have different views on music, books, films, sports. My father likes horror films and my mother likes “soap operas”. My father is fond of tennis. My mother doesn’t go in for sports. My parents are hard-working people. My mother keeps house and takes care of my family. She is very good at cooking and she is clever with her hands.

My elder brother is an economist. He is married. His wife is a third-year student of the Teacher’s Training Institute. They have a little daughter. I like my little niece very much. My younger brother is not married he is single. He works at a large plant and studies at a technical college by correspondence. My sister is five years older than I. She is a book-keeper, her husband is a manager. Their son, my nephew, goes to school he is in the second form.

We are a united family and like to spend our free time together.

Not so many questions at once. My son is eleven his name is Alec. He likes collecting stamps.

 

Is your family large?

Not very. We are four: my wife, my two children and I.

How old are your children?

My son is fourteen and my daughter is twenty.

What are they?

My son is a schoolboy my daughter is a student.

Exercise 18. Listen to the text and speak about Steve’s family.

 

My name’s Steve. This is my family. This is my father and this is my mother. My father is fifty-five, and my mother is forty-eight. And who is this? This man is my father’s brother, he is my uncle. My mother is a housewife. And this is my mother’s sister. She is my aunt, her name is Helen. And what is your uncle’s name? His name is Peter. He is a journalist and his wife is an engineer. These are my two sisters: Ann and Jane. Ann is my elder sister, she is twenty three, she is married, her husband is a lawyer. Jane is my younger sister, she is only sixteen, she is in high school. And who is this man? He is my brother. His name is Robert. He is twenty-one, he is at the university. He is always very busy at the university and at home. He is my father’s favourite son. His hobby is reading. And this is my sister Ann’s little daughter, she is only five. Her name is Alice. And this is their pet – a dog named Rex. Rex is one year old but he is very clever.

 

Exercise 19. Read the text and reproduce it in Russian:

 

Let me introduce myself. My name is David Nelson. I was born in London< but now I live in California, in the USA. I am a TV news reporter. I work for a small newspaper and I really like my work, because it is very interesting. I meet many interesting people every day.

I come from a large family. My father has a farm in the North of England and he is very busy with the work on the farm. My mother is a housewife. She has a lot of work to do about the house and she is very busy too. Every summer I go to see my parents and my relatives. I have two sisters and one brother. My elder sister is twenty six. She is married and has a son Nick. He is six and is in the first grade at school. My sister is a doctor, and her husband is a lawyer. It is a well-paid job, and he makes a lot of money. My younger sister’s name is Ann. She is twenty and is in her first year at Oxford University. My brother Ted who is fifteen lives with my parents. He is in high school. He wants to become an economist, but I’m afraid it is only a dream because he is rather lazy and my mom and dad have a lot of problems with him/

Now a few words about myself. I’m twenty-four. I am married and have a family of my own. My wife Jane is twenty-three, she is a school teacher but she doesn’t work now because we have a baby, she is only seven months old. So we are three in my family and we get on very well with each other.

 

Exercise 20. Get information about your friend’s family. Use the following questions.

7. Do you often spend time together?

 

Exercise 21. Speak on your family. Start with:
