My Breakfast

I have my breakfast¹ at eight o'clock. On week-days my break­fast is usually scant: bread and butter, a cheese or a sausage sand­wich and a cup of tea or coffee. I don't care for cocoa. Sometimes I have fried eggs, sausages or cottage cheese, a bun or a cake, tea or coffee.

On my days out my breakfast is substantial. It consists of some cereal: semolina, rice cereal or porridge, curd pancakes, meat or cab­bage patties and freshly-made strong tea.

British Breakfast

Continental Breakfast

 

Mr Smith works in an office. Every morning he has his break­fast before he goes to his office. Today he has orange juice, por­ridge, a well-boiled egg, black pudding, butter, toasts and white cof­fee.

Some people prefer continental breakfast of coffee or tea and croissant, butter and jam. Continental breakfast is scant.

Запомните следующие сочетания глагола to have с суще­ствительными: to have breakfast завтракать (утром перед ухо­дом на работу); to have lunch завтракать (второй завтрак в 11 -13, соответствует по времени нашему обеду); to have tea пить чай (часов в 16 -17); to have dinner обедать (в 19 - 20 - в Англии, Франции и т.д.); to have supper ужинать (ужин позд­ний и легкий).

В этих сочетаниях перед существительным, как правило, стоит притяжательное местоимение (чего нет в русском язы­ке).

I have my breakfast early.

She has her lunch at her office.

Вопросительная и отрицательная формы, а также краткие ответы образуются при помощи вспомогательного глагола to do.

Do you have your breakfast early?

Yes, I do.

We don't have our dinner at home.

2. They serve breakfast from eight to nine. Завтрак подают от восьми до девяти часов. В данном предложении местоиме­ние they является формальным подлежащим, так как не передает никакого смысла и, следовательно, не переводится на рус­ский язык (They say that... Говорят, что...),

Обратите внимание на перевод слова очень на англий­ский язык. Если оно относится к прилагательному или наречию, то русский и английский эквиваленты совпадают. Сравните:

Катя — очень хорошая официантка.— Kate is a very good waitress.

Она обслуживает гостей очень хорошо. — She serves her guests very well.

Но если слово очень относится к глаголу, то русский и английский эквиваленты не совпадают. Сравните:

Катя очень любит свою работу. — Kate likes her work very much.
