Plural form of nouns (Множественное число существительных)

Общее правило.

Исчисляемые существительные (то есть те, которые можно посчитать) могут иметь форму единственного числа, если речь идёт об одном предмете, и множественного числа, если речь идёт о двух или более предметах.

Форма множественного числа у большинства исчисляемых существительных образуется с помощью суффикса -s (-es), например:

a book – books

книга – книги

a table – tables

стол – столы

Особенности написания.

Един. число Множ. число
Сущ. оканчивающиеся на -f/-fe Eg. wolf, life, leaf   Окончание меняется на -ves. Eg. wolves, lives, leaves.
Сущ. оканчивающиеся на -о Eg. tomato, potato Прибавляется суффикс -es. Eg. Tomatoes, potatoes. ! НО! photos, radios, zoos иряд других.
Сущ. оканчивающиеся на -y c предшествующим согласным Eg. army, family   Прибавляется суффикс -es, а буква -y переходит в -i-. Eg. armies, families.

НО!!! Eсли перед -y- стоит гласная, действует общее правило!

Eg. boy- boys, toy- toys

Сущ. оканчивающиеся на -s, -ss, -ch, -sh-, -x(шипящие и свистящие) eg. Dress, dish, box Прибавляется суффикс -es   Eg. dresses, dishes, boxes.

Исключения.

В английском языке есть небольшое количество существительных, которые образуют форму множественного числа не по общему правилу:

ox oxen быки
fish fish рыбы

Exercise 1. Write underlined nouns in the form of singular and make corresponding changes if necessary.

 1. Students know the town well and can show you the way to the theatre. 2. My friends live in Sevastopol, they study at the University. 3. Do these boys go to the Institute in the morning or in the afternoon? 4. Professors want to buy some books which they need for their work. 5. These girls sing well but they cannot play the piano. 6. Housewives work very much at home. 7. Two of my friends work at this plant, they are engineers. 8. These little girls like when their brothers play with them. 9. Children spend a lot of time out-of-doors. 10. My cousins have families of their own. 11. My sisters have breakfast at 8 o’clock and then they go to school. They return home only at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. 12. Navigators go to the library twice a month. 13. Their teachers tell them that they make many mistakes because they are not attentive at the classes. 14. Seamen go to work by bus and return home on foot. 15. Two of my sisters are married, their husbands are workers.
