The Past Simple Tense
Форма прошедшего времени одна и та же для всех лиц.

Past Simple образуется: для неправильных глаголов – это 2-я форма глаголов: went/ did/ etc; для правильных – прибавлением -ed- к основе глагола: wanted/ moved.
-ed- произносится, как:
[t] после глухих согласных: finished
[d] после звонких согласных и гласных: arrived
[id] после t, d: translated
Утвердительная форма. Отрицательная форма

Вопросительная форма Краткие ответы
You Yes, I did.

Куда вы переехали? - Я переехал в Ростов.
Past Simple употребляется для выражения обычного, регулярно повторяющегося действия, действия-факта, последовательных действий в прошлом. Часто сопровождается такими словами:
night
Saturday morning
Last week Yesterday afternoon
month evening
year
а также:
years ago, in 1999, in August.
We met in 1990. Мы встретились в 1990 году.
When I was a child, we lived in a small town. Когда я был ребенком, мы жили в маленьком городке.
She entered the room, stopped, listened carefully. Она вошла в комнату, остановилась, внимательно прислушалась.
Exercise 1. Give the past form of the verbs, consult your dictionary.

Exercise 2. Translate the following sentences. Pay attention to the verbs.
1. We translated that text last week. 2. They graduated from the Institute in 1998. He worked at a plant last year. 4. Did you learn this rule two days ago? 5. The didn’t read books in the library, they did it in the classroom. 5. These students worked with dictionaries in the library. 6. He left the classroom at six. 7. The lessons on management began ten minutes ago. 8. Did you see him yesterday? Yes, I did. 9. I knew his new address. 10. Our football team won the game. 11. I thought about my report on History. 12. I read an interesting book during my week-end.
Exercise 3. Open the brackets using the verbs in the Past Simple.
1. I (to go) to see my friend yesterday. 2. My friend’s grandfather (to be) a participant of the Great Patriotic War. 3. He (to take part) in many battles during the Great Patriotic War. 4. He (to remain) in the ranks of the Russian Army till the end of the war. 5. He (to move) to the Far East. 6. He (to serve) there for many years. 7. He (to study) at the Moscow University last year. 8. He (to pass) the exam on Monday. 9. He (to be awarded) many orders and medals. 10. He (to write) 2 letters to his friends. 11. Exercise 4. Rewrite the sentences with – ago-.

Exercise 5. Translate into English.
1. Я надеюсь, они купили вчера билеты в театр. 2. Когда они заплатили за учебу? 3. Они навестили ее на прошлой неделе. 4. Вы поговорили с ним на эту тему? 5. Она говорит, что они пообедали час назад. 6. Они переехали в Москву в прошлом году. 7. Его дедушка прошел славный путь от Сталинграда до Берлина. 8. Он не ходил в институт на прошлой неделе, потому что болел. 9. Когда ему было 8 лет, он учил английский. 10. Его отец закончил один из московских институтов в 1985г. 11. Когда я учился в одиннадцатом классе, я решил стать юристом.
