| Mary Morris and Nick Norman are staying with the Warners' family. The family consists of Mr Warner, Mrs Warner, their son David (20), their daughter Betty (16), twin sisters (8), dog Lucky and cat Debbie. Dave and Betty are taking Mary and Nick home in their car. M. What a lovely building! Is it a typical American house? B. It is typical of Washington. But houses vary from district to district, from city to city as everywhere, I guess. D. We have no skyscrapers here in Washington, D. C. But downtown in such large cities as New York people live predominantly in blocks of flats. Some flats are two-storeyed. And in the suburbs people prefer to live in houses of their own with a lawn, a garage and even a swimming pool. N. How much do such houses cost, I wonder? D. It depends on the district the house is in. Simiilar houses may have different prices. The most expensive are in downtown, the cheapest in slums, which are not necessarily in the suburbs. M. Just as in London but not so as in Moscow. In Russia, well-to-do or prominent people do not necessarily live in respectable districts. And in Great Britain people move according to the growth or decline in their well-being. D. The same as in the USA. And everybody's principal goal here is to have a private home. Actually all young Americans begin saving money to buy a house. N. Is it an achievable goal? D. It depends. You have a chance at any rate. An average price for a middle-class house in a more or less prestigious district is about $200. 000-300. 000. M. It's common in Britain for young people to prefer to live separately from their parents and begin with tiny flats which they rent sharing with a friend. D. Одинаковые дома могут иметь разную цену. Самые дорогие дома в центре города, самые дешевые - в трущобах, которые необязательно в пригородах. - Так же, как и в Лондоне, но не так, как в Москве. В России преуспевающие и выдающиеся люди живут необязательно в респектабельных районах. А в Великобритании люди переезжают в зависимости от роста или падения их благосостояния. - В Штатах то же самое. Но первейшая цель каждого здесь - иметь собственный дом. Практически все молодые американцы начинают копить деньги на покупку дома. - И эта цель достижима? - Это зависит от многого. По крайней мере, у тебя есть возможность. Средняя цена дома для семьи из среднего класса в более или менее престижном районе составляет 200000-300000 долларов. - В Англии обычное дело, когда молодые люди предпочитают жить отдельно от родителей и начинают с того, что снимают крохотную квартирку на пару с кем-то из друзей. - Та же практика имеется у нас, если только молодой человек не студент и не живет в общежитии университетского кампуса. |
