Reserve a room The secretary of the Russian Trade Delegation in London telephones the Tavistock Hotel to reserve a room for Mr. Kozlov. Receptionist: Reception-desk. Tavistock Hotel. Good morning. Secretary: Good morning. This is the Russian Trade Delegation. We'd like to reserve a room for Mr. Kozlov for three nights from the 20th of October. Receptionist: Could you tell me what accommodation Mr. Kozlov would like to have? Secretary: Yes, certainly. A single room with a private bath. Receptionist: Just a minute. I'll see whether we have the accommodation available.
Secretary: Thank you. Receptionist: I can reserve a single room with a bath from the 20th of October, for three nights. Secretary: Thank you. What's the charge? Receptionist: Eight pounds ten pence a night. Thank you. Secretary: Good-bye. Receptionist: Good-bye. At the hotel At about 1 o’clock in the afternoon Mister Kozlov arrived at the Tavistock Hotel. A hotel-porter took Kozlov's suitcase and showed him to the reception desk. Kozlov told the receptionist that the Russian Trade Delegation had reserved a room in his name a few days before. The receptionist checked that and said that they could let him have a nice room on the third floor. After that the receptionist gave Mr. Kozlov a form and asked him to fill it in. Mr. Kozlov wrote his name, address, nationality and occupation on the form and gave it back. Then the porter took the key to Kozlov's room and they went to the lift. In a minute they were on the third floor. The porter unlocked the door, brought in the suitcase and asked if that was all. Kozlov thanked him, gave him a tip and the porter went out. Kozlov unpacked his suitcase and rang the bell for a chambermaid because he wanted to have his suit pressed. Chambermaid: Good afternoon, sir. What can I do for you? Kozlov: Good afternoon. Could I have my jacket and trousers pressed? Chambermaid: Very good, sir. I think I can do it right away. Kozlov: Thank you. By the way, could I have an extra blanket? I'm afraid I'll be cold at night as the weather is damp today. Chambermaid: I'll attend to it, sir. Kozlov: Thank you. I wonder if the restaurant is open now. Chambermaid: Yes, sir. The restaurant serves breakfast from eight to ten, lunch from twelve to two thirty and dinner front six to eight. Kozlov: Thank you very much. Text 2 Staying at a hotel As I’m the manager of our company I often go on business trips to visit our trade partner's manufacturing plant London. When the plane lands at Heathrow airport I go through passport control and check my luggage at the Customs house. A representative of our Trade Delegation meets me at the airport and takes me to the Embassy Hotel. I often put up at this hotel. It's a comfortable hotel in the center of London near the Hyde Park. Prices for the rooms are reasonable and the hotel is usually full (booked out), so the rooms are reserved in advance. It takes us about half an hour to get to the hotel. At the reception desk we address the receptionist and say that we have reserved hotel accommodation for Mr. Petrov at the hotel. The receptionist checks the reservation and informs us that one single room with private bath is reserved for Mr. Petrov from this day. The room is on the third floor, number 301. We thank the receptionist and I fill in the following form:
The receptionist thanks us and gives me the key to my room. He calls the porter and asks him to take (show) me up to my room in the lift. My room is large and very light. There is a lot of sunshine in it. There is a big window faces a side street. To the right of the window there is a sofa and a standard lamp. To the left of the window there is a television-set. The wardrobe is in the left-hand corner of the room. Near it there are two easy-chairs and a little table with newspapers and magazines on it. The walls of the room are blue. The ceiling is white. The floor is brown. I like my room because it’s very comfortable and there is a hospitality tray.
The receptionist asks me not to miss breakfast served from 7.30 to 8.30. He also warns me that the hotel charges include breakfast and maid-service and I don't have to give any tips to the maids. I ask him to make a wake-up call because I set up an appointment. The receptionist wishes me to enjoy, my stay at the hotel.
