Mack and Mabel (1974. LA tryout excerpts and home movies. Starring: Bernadette Peters, Robert Preston, Lisa Kirk. This amazing video features over 30 minutes of footage from nearly every number in the show and two book scenes, with live sound, filmed from the wings during performance and from the house during tech, rehearsal room footage that lasts about 10 minutes, rehearsal footage for a special performance at the Hollywood Bowl, and a pool party at Jerry Herman's LA home with the cast relaxing during the LA tryout. You get a very good sense of the production. Rare, priceless stuff. Quality: C+)

Mamma Mia! (30 july 2017. Hollywood Bowl. Cast: Jennifer Nettles, Dove Cameron, Tisha Campbell-Martin, Lea DeLaria, Jaime Camil, Steven Weber, Hamish Linklater, Corbin Bleu, Charlotte Mary Wen, Tiana Okoye, Rodd Farhadi, Payson Lewis. The annual Hollywood Bowl production never disappoints. Jennifer absolutely kills it, and there are some brilliant comedic moments from the whole cast. This capture is nearly perfect with just a couple quick dropouts and some brief moments where the video wanders or goes out of focus, but never for more than a few seconds. It's filmed in 16: 9, with a mix of wides, mediums, and close-ups. The sound is excellent. Includes curtain call, encores, and playbill scans. Quality: A-. 2DVD)

Merrily We Roll Along (July 2013. London. Cast: Mark Umbers, Damian Humbley, Jenna Russell, Clare Foster, Josefina Gabrielle. A beautiful capture of this perfect production, every single cast member is incredible, the definitive production of this outstanding show. Quality: A-)

 

Metamorphoses (10 apr 2002. Broadway. Anjali Bhimani, Raymond Fox, Kyle Hall, Doug Hara, Felicity Jones, Chris Kipiniak, Louise Lamson, Erick Lochtefeld, Mariann Mayberry, Lisa Tejero. A fantastic show captured pretty well. There's a head that occasionally gets in the way, and there is a lot of noise from moving the camera, but you still get everything from the show. What a brilliant production! B+)

 

Metropolis (1989. London. Cast: Judy Kuhn, Brian Blessed, Graham Bickley, Jonathan Adams, Paul Keown, Stifyn Parri, Lindsey Danvers, Colin Fay. Sound is OK if not a bit crackly, but the video suffers from massive generation loss. There's a constant wall of noise and the colour is minimal and best and mostly lacking. Plenty of head. Possibly two shows cut together to include close-ups as this is mostly in wide shot. The noise intensity and type changes when this happens so it's a good theory. Quality: B-/C+)

Michelangelo, the most sought after artist in Europe is having problems choosing between three lovers - a prince, a servant and a hustler. Probably second generation, good clear sound. Quality: B+)

 

Midnight Tango (13 July 2011. London. Starring: Vincent Simone, Flavia Cacace. Set in a late-night bar in downtown Buenos Aires and featuring some of the finest tango dancers in the world alongside Vincent and Flavia, Midnight Tango promises to take you on a journey into the heart of Argentina's capital. Minsky's (22 feb 2009. Los Angeles, CA. Cast: Christopher Fitzgerald, Katharine Leonard, Beth Leavel, George Wendt, John Cariani, Rachel Dratch, Kevin Cahoon, Gerry Vichi, Paul Vogt. First five or ten minutes are pretty shaky and obstructed, but it gets much better as the show goes on. One head that blocks some of the stage during most of the show, and unfortunately it does block a piece of the action a couple of times. A couple of blackouts throughout the show. Great wide shots for the big dance numbers and the moving scenery, as well as some medium shots and closeups throughout the show. Some washout here and there, especially in the wides, but most of the time the color is great, and the sound is excellent throughout the show. Quality: B+. 2DVD)

 

Minsky's (26 feb 2009. Los Angeles, CA. Cast: Christopher Fitzgerald, Katharine Leonard, George Wendt, Beth Leavel, Rachel Dratch, Gerry Vichi. Minimal spotlight washout with one short blackout during act 1. Act 2 starts 3-4 minutes into the opening number. There is a very occasional head in the way that doesn't obstruct much though and the video can be a little shaky at times. Quality: A-)

 

Misery (11 nov 2015. Broadway. Cast: Bruce Willis, Laurie Metcalf, Leon Addison Brown. Excellent HD capture of the Stephen King thriller. Well filmed with good full stage shots and close-ups when needed. Quality: A-. 2DVD)

 

Miss Saigon (1989. Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London. Cast: Kim - Lea Salonga, Chris - Simon Bowman, The Engineer - Jonathan Pryce, John - Peter Polycarpou, Ellen - Claire Moore, Thuy - Keith Burns. Audience-shot highlights of Act 1, though Act 2 is almost entirely complete. Nicely filmed and pretty good quality considering how old this is. Filmed before a lot of the changes were made. Plus three pro-shot songs broadcast on Terry Wogan: “Sun And Moon”, “Bui Doi” and “I Still Believe”. Quality: B)
