2. Read and translate the text about Novocherkassk: Novocherkassk is situated in the south of Russia in Rostov region. Novocherkassk lies at the confluence of the Tuzlov and the Aksay rivers. It was founded as the new capital of the Don Cossacks in 1805 (30th of May) by the General Matvey Platov (1753-1818), the famous Ataman who led his Cossack regiments against Napoleon. The old principle town was 20 kilometers from the present site along the Don river. The original 16th-century town of Cherkassk (now stanitsa Starocherkasskaya) was frequently flooded and it was decided to build a new Don Cossacks town on the Azov hills. The new place was approved by the tsar Alexander I (1777-1825). Novocherkassk was designed by the French engineer and architect Franz Devolan.
Novocherkassk is a unique town owing to its history, planning and architecture. Almost each old building has its own features. There are about 200 monuments of federal and regional importance among them Ataman palace, Triumphal arches, commemorating the Don Cossaks participation in the 1812 war against Napoleon, and the most known Novocherkassk Patriarchal Ascension (Voznesenski) Army Cathedral (1805-1904). Almost all are in the centre of the town. Novocherkassk has always been the stronghold of Russian Orthodox religion. There were numerous churches and chapels in the past, but a lot of them were destroyed after the October Revolution. Nowadays many of them have been rebuilt. Novocherkassk Ascension Patriarchal Army Cathedral is the five-domed building, which stands 75 meters tall, and is a notable example of the Russian Neo-Byzantine architecture. It is the main cathedral of the Don Cossacks and the object of cultural heritage. Next to the cathedral there is a monument to Yermak (1532-1585), the Cossack ataman and the gallant conqueror of Siberia. There are two monuments to the famous General Matvey Ivanovich Platov: the first and the oldest one (1853) is in the front of the Ataman Palace, the second one was opened in 2003 and stands on the Yermak square. In Novocherkassk there are several museums of outstanding painters, among them the Grekov Museum, the Krylov Museum. The most well-known is the Museum of the Don Cossacks History (1899). It has a lot of exhibits (about 115, 000) connected with the history of the Don Cossacks: arms and armament including the famous general Platov’s sabre, household stuff of the Don Cossacks, banners and etc. In the second part of the twentieth century Novocherkassk became an industrial town. Many plants and industrial enterprises were built here, among them the only in Russia electro-locomotive plant, chemical plant, Novocherkassk electrode plant, a thermal power station and many others. Modern Novocherkassk produces electric locomotives, electrodes, mining machinery, machine tools, and chemicals for plastics and synthetic fibres. Novocherkassk is called the town of students. The modern city has numerous institutions of higher and professional education and research, among them Platov South-Russian State Polytechnic University (NPI), Novocherkassk State Melioration Academy, Suvorov military school, Cossack military school, the Don branch of the Novocherkassk Space Simulation Centre. Today the population of the town is about 170, 000 people. Being the administrative capital of the Don Cossacks, Novocherkassk was inhabited mainly by people of Cossack origin. But nowadays there are residents from other places, including people of different nationalities. In 1993 Novocherkassk became the capital of the Cossacks on the decision of the Russian and foreign Cossacks again. Many outstanding people visited Novocherkassk among them tsar Alexander I, the great Russian poets and writers Pushkin A. S., Lermontov M. Y., Griboedov A. S., Herzen A. I. Among the Honored citizens of the town is the first cosmonaut Iurii Gagarin, the Don writer Kalinin A. V. and many others. Novocherkassk is a very green and nice town due to the parks and gardens.
