Предисловие
Настоящее пособие предназначено для студентов первого курса неязыковых вузов и студентов колледжей. Оно составлено в соответствии с требованиями программ к базовому курсу иностранного языка и рекомендуется как для работы над изучаемым материалом на занятии и для самостоятельной работы студентов.

Пособие содержит из ряда разделов, каждый из которых представляет отдельную тему. Каждый блок представлен тематическим словарем, тремя текстами, послетекстовыми упражнениями и диалогом. Тексты I и II – разговорные. Они являются моделью для построения аналогичных высказываний по теме. Работа с этими текстами направлена на развитие умений читать текст с полным охватом содержания (изучающее чтение), логически и последовательно высказываться на основе прочитанного в рамках усвоенного языкового материала, с выражением собственного отношения к предмету высказывания.
Процесс восприятия текста начинается с активного усвоения тематического словаря, который расположен перед текстом. Языковые упражнения обеспечивают тренировку лексико-грамматического материала. Речевые упражнения стимулируют речевые действия обучающихся и ведут их к выражению своей мысли на уровнях предложения, сверхфразового единства, развернутого монологического/диалогического высказывания.
Текст III является познавательным. Он имеет социокультурную направленность и формирует умение чтения с общим охватом содержания (ознакомительное чтение).
Каждый блок завершается рядом вопросов, способствующих привлечению знаний о культуре страны изучаемого языка и сопоставлению их с культурой своей страны.
Работа над диалогом направлена на развитие умения конструировать диалог на основе образца в рамках изучаемой разговорной темы.
В основу пособия положен принцип коммуникативности, что выражается в вовлечении обучающихся в общение через создание учебно-речевых ситуаций, оречевленность упражнений, речевое и учебное партнерство.

Text I
Olga’s family
Read Olga’s story about her family and say what family to Olga’s opinion is considered to be a good one.
My name is Olga Steblova. I was born on the 5th of May. I live in Moscow together with my parents and sister.
My father is a businessman. He is the manager of a small firm. He is always busy. Sometimes he works even at weekends. My father is only 42 and my mother is 40. She is an economist and works in one of commercial banks. She works 5 days a week and is off on Saturdays and Sundays. My parents have been married for 20 years. They have much in common: they watch the same films, read the same books and newspapers, but they have different views on education and music. They are hard-working people. So we try to help mother about the house. I clean the flat. My sister goes shopping, and washes dishes.
My sister’s name is Lena. She is three years younger than me. Lena is a student of the ninth form. She does well at school and gets only good and excellent marks. Lena is good at painting. She likes to go to the museums and art galleries. Her favorite painter is Rembrandt. My sister is fond of classic music. She plays piano very well and often goes to the concerts with her best friends.
As for me, I’m a student of the University. I am going to be a manager. Different aspects of Math and Economics come easy to me. I am on the top of the list in our group in these subjects. I’m good at English too. I’d like to learn some other European languages to communicate with people from different countries. I am always very busy, but when I am free, I like to read books. My favorite writer is Ernest Hemingway. I am fond of sports. I've got the first category in volleyball.
I have many friends. We like to spend time together. We walk about the city, talk, dance and do all the things which are interesting for young people.
My family is very united. All of us like to spend our week-ends in the country. We often go to the village to see our grandparents. They are pensioners. I like them very much because they always try to listen to my opinion, though they don’t always agree with what I say. We are deeply attached to each other and we get on very well.

I also have many other relatives: uncles, aunts, cousins and many friends. Most of all I like my young aunt. Nina is my mother’s younger sister. She is married and has a family of her own. Her husband, Victor, is a doctor. Nina and Victor have two sons. They are twins. I like them very much. My aunt and uncle like to travel. Last summer they invited me to go to the Black See. It was a wonderful journey!
I think, it is very important to have a good family where people are helpful and respect each other.
