The subjunctive mood in appositive clauses

Exercise 1. Analyze the form of the verb in the following sentences. Translate the sentences into Russian.

1. No one objected to his demand that he should be paid his regular fee. 2. No one objected to his demand that he be paid regularly. 3. His fear that anyone should see him was deep. 4. The new instruction that progress reports should be submitted once a week surprised everyone, but was nevertheless followed. 5. She expressed our common wish that the subject be given serious attention. 6. I could not hide my disbelief that my colleagues should have done so well without me while I had been ill. 7. Strong apprehension lest someone should reveal her secret was written all over her face. 8. Why didn’t you stop him when he voiced that silly proposal that we should not attend the session? 9. Everyone thought his fear lest his real name be found out groundless. 10. His request that we should both join the investigation intrigued us. 11. I think Peter’s suggestion that we should go to the bar and try to recover from the jet lag is reasonable. 12. I agree that his idea that we go to Alaska in summer was a little bit sudden. 13. It was my suggestion that you should join us.

Exercise 2. Supply the necessary forms for the verbs given in brackets in the following appositive clauses:

1. The proposal that she (to meet) us has merit. 2. The request that we (to be) ready to leave at six is a nuisance. 3. The recommendation that she (to take) a holiday was carried out. 4. The demand that she (to complete) the report has been carried out. 5. The requirement that he (to find) work will be hard to meet. 6. The suggestion that he (to go around) with a Griffiths even if he was new here and did not know many people, appealed to him. Wouldn’t it reflect a lot of credit on him? 7. His advice that everybody (to wait) till next month was very strange. 8. Her suggestion that we (to stop) and (to have) dinner was reasonable. 9. The order that everybody (to gather) at the entrance surprised us. 10. His fear lest they (to let) him down was great.

Exercise 3. Complete the following sentences.

Exercise 4. Translate the following sentences from Russian into English.

1. Меня расстроило ваше распоряжение о том, чтобы наш отдел был закрыт. 2. Марго высказала общее пожелание всех сотрудников, чтобы часть столовой была отведена для некурящих. 3.
